💛 Understanding Plagiocephaly (Flat Head Syndrome) in Babies — Every Parent Should Know This! 👶✨
As parents, we pay attention to every tiny detail of our baby’s growth — and that includes their head shape. Many moms and dads notice that one side of their baby’s head looks a little flatter or asymmetrical. This condition is called Plagiocephaly, and it’s more common than most people realize. 💛
A normal skull has a rounded, even shape. With plagiocephaly, one side of the skull becomes flattened due to repeated pressure — often from babies sleeping or resting in the same position for long periods. This is also known as positional asymmetry and does not affect brain development. 🌿
Here are some key things parents should know:
🍼 Why it happens: Babies spend lots of time lying on their backs, especially in those early weeks. A preferred head-turning side, muscle tightness (torticollis), or long hours in car seats/swings can contribute.
✨ How to help: Tummy time, alternating head positions during sleep (while ALWAYS keeping baby on their back for safety), holding/carrying baby more often, and encouraging them to turn toward different directions.
👨⚕️ When to check with a pediatrician: If asymmetry is getting worse, not improving, or you’re simply unsure — early guidance is always best. In some cases, physical therapy or repositioning therapy may help.
Remember — you did nothing wrong. This is incredibly common and usually very manageable with early awareness. The goal is not perfection — it’s healthy development and a happy baby. 💕
Let’s normalize these conversations so no parent feels stressed or alone!
