“Oh wow I didn’t know that!”
I’ll never forget when a client of mine was telling me about an appointment she had had with her doctor. She had just become pregnant through IVF, and her doctor was now outlining the extra ultrasounds and tests she would need, because of the risks associated with IVF. I remember he saying to me, “why didn’t he mention these things beforehand?”
Before reading on, I want to disclose that this client had gone on to have a healthy baby, and healthy babies and pregnancies are absolutely possible with IVF. However there are absolutely risks, and I want you to know what you can do about it.
Increased risks have been found for the following in studies, when comparing IVF pregnancies to spontaneous pregnancies:
Gestational diabetes
Gestational high blood pressure/pre-eclampsia
Preterm birth
Low birth weight
Congenital defects particularly found in the eyes, heart, reproductive organs, and urinary system which includes the kidneys
Nervous System disorders such as neural tube defects
Higher BMI in baby later in life
Blood pressure issues in baby later in life
Glucose intolerance for baby later in life
What you can do, is understand that if you are having trouble getting pregnant you have some options. You can jump straight to IVF and risk the things listed above, or you can address the causes as to why you are having trouble conceiving and eliminate the need for IVF entirely, or at the very least maximize the likelihood of a successful IVF round by optimizing your health and minimize risks associated with IVF if you should need to move forward with that.
This post is intended to bring awareness to the real risks associated with IVF and empower you to seek help to optimize your fertility, pregnancy, and health of baby.
