The Town of Stonington is preparing to launch a new service to the Stonington community, and volunteers are needed. In partnership with URCommunity Cares of Manchester, Stonington Community Cares will provide non-professional services to residents of the Town who are either elderly (70 or older) or disabled (temporary or permanent) who are in need of them. Examples of the assistance you may request are yard work, house cleaning, dish washing, driving to doctor appointments or shopping ,or simply to provide companionship. If you are a retiree with a few extra hours, a high school student who needs community service hours, or a local business wanting to perform community service, we need your help to make this project work.

The service is free. An initial investment has been provided by the Town. Further funding will come from fundraising. The money will be used to do background checks to insure the safety of both volunteers and recipients, and to cover administrative expenses.

The Town committed to the program after a year long evaluation by the Committee on Aging, and has obtained the full endorsement of First Selectwoman, Danielle Chesebrough and Director of Human Services, Leanne Theodore. The purpose of the program is to improve the quality of life of residents in need, and to overcome isolation and loneliness.

Interested volunteers and people in need may register for participation at: URCOMMUNITYCARES.ORG. For those with no internet access or for those who require assistance, please call Stonington Human Services at 860-535-5015. Town residents are encouraged to attend meetings of the Commission on Aging on the first Wednesday of each month, at 4 pm, at the Pawcatuck Neighborhood Center.

The Commission will sponsor an informational meeting to talk about the project in the coming weeks.
