Rise Up Mystic

Rise Up Mystic RiseUpMystic is a local, grassroots movement for progressive change. There are no requirements to join us, all are welcome.

It began on November 10th, 2016, the morning after the presidential election, as we felt the weight of an upcoming administration born out of fear and hate. It began with long low sighs of disbelief as we greeted one another at work and at bus stops, with looks of despair as we imagined the repercussions of electing a person with no political experience and no decorum on the international stage. It began as brave Americans started to realize in order to keep our country truly a land of the free and continue to honor democracy, that we the people are going to have to rise up, defend our shared values, and fight for the rights of the marginalized. It began when we knew it was time for action. We gathered to envision what a grassroots organization designed to counter the effects of the upcoming administration might look like. We came together to end the divisiveness and begin a conversation, to end negativity and create positive change. It was clear there was a lot of ground to cover. Protecting people of color and LGBT communities, defending issues of women’s health, protecting the environment, supporting the ACLU, and staying true to America’s roots as a land that accepts and appreciates immigrants. The overwhelming change in government demands a clear and organized response. We want to inform, encourage and empower as many people as possible to speak out for progressive change, to fight for human rights, and to preserve the dignity of our beloved nation.

Rules adopted by voters only work if our elected leaders follow them.

At the center of this meeting is a fundamental issue: respect for a Town Charter. The Charter is not a suggestion. It is the governing document adopted by a large majority of Stonington voters, and it remains in effect. Ignoring it or trying to work around it undermines the will of the people.

At this meeting, actions were taken that conflict with the Charter and with the Town Attorney’s written legal opinion. No one, regardless of their personal views or experience, is above the rules that voters approved. When governing bodies treat voter-approved rules as optional, accountability erodes and public trust diminishes.

We encourage you to watch the December 9, 2025 Stonington Board of Finance meeting and decide for yourself whether this reflects the standard of local government our citizens should expect.

Enjoy the videos and music you love, upload original content, and share it all with friends, family, and the world on YouTube.

Friends - this is critical.

When Washington shuts down, it’s our towns that feel it first. Families struggle, programs stall, and neighbors are left waiting for help. And it's local leaders who decide how we respond when times are tough.

Your vote in local elections is crucial. Your vote chooses who steps up to protect families, support schools, and keep our communities strong.

The federal government can stop. We can’t.
Vote local. Vote now. Vote for each other.

Sunday is your last opportunity to Vote Early, and Election Day is November 4!
