Attachment Styles: Why We Connect The Way We Do
Sydne Burrow, MS, LCMHCA, CRC

Anxious-Preoccupied Attachment Style: "love me, please don't leave me"
• Crave deep intimacy but worry others don't value them equally
• Highly emotionally expressive
• Seek constant approval & responsiveness from partners
• Feel anxious when not in contact with loved ones
• negative self-views, accept blame easily
• Often look to relationships to "complete" them

Fearful-Avoidant Attachment Style: push-pull of wanting love but fearing it
• Want close relationships but struggle to trust completely
• Fear getting hurt if they become too vulnerable
• Often stems from childhood trauma or abuse
• Hold negative views of both themselves AND others
• Feel unworthy of love while doubting partners' intentions
• Suppress emotions & avoid intimacy as protection
• Less comfortable expressing affection

Secure Attachment Style: relationship gold standard
• Comfortable with emotional closeness & interdependence
• Don't worry about being alone or rejected
• Positive views of themselves AND their partners
• Balance intimacy with independence beautifully
• Report higher relationship satisfaction than other styles
• Usually stems from warm, responsive childhood relationships

Merging Attachment Style: intimacy becomes overwhelming
• Crave complete emotional fusion with partners
• Often find others aren't willing to get as close as they want
• Become overly dependent on attachment figures
• Experience high worry, emotional dysregulation & impulsiveness
• Hypersensitive to perceived threats or triggers
• Overreact by desperately seeking more closeness
• Partners may feel suffocated by persistent demands for connection

Dismissive-Avoidant Attachment Style: "I don't need anyone"
• Highly value independence & self-sufficiency
• Prefer not to depend on others (or vice versa)
• May appear to avoid attachment altogether
• See themselves as invulnerable to relationship pain
• Often deny needing close relationships
• Seek less intimacy & view partners less positively than themselves
• Hide feelings & distance from potential rejection
• Cope through emotional suppression & distancing

Mental Health Check:
Understanding Symptoms vs Signs
One of the most important distinctions in mental health is understanding the difference between what you feel inside and what others can see on the outside. Both matter, and both can guide us toward getting the help we need.

Symptoms
What the person experiences internally - subjective feelings and sensations that only they can report:
• Feeling sad, anxious, or hopeless
• Racing thoughts or inability to concentrate
• Hearing voices or having intrusive thoughts
• Feeling disconnected from reality
• Physical sensations like chest tightness or nausea
• Memory problems or confusion
• Feeling overwhelmed or irritable

Signs
What others can observe externally - objective, measurable behaviors or changes:
• Changes in sleep patterns (insomnia or oversleeping)
• Appetite changes or significant weight loss/gain
• Social withdrawal or isolation
• Decline in personal hygiene or self-care
• Increased substance use
• Difficulty completing tasks at work or school
• Changes in speech patterns (talking faster/slower, less talkative)
• Physical symptoms like trembling, restlessness, or fatigue
• Self-harm behaviors or scars

Why This Matters
• For individuals: Understanding this difference helps you communicate more effectively with healthcare providers. You might say "I'm experiencing anxiety attacks" (symptom) and "I've been calling in sick to work more often" (sign).
• For loved ones: You can't see someone's internal pain, but you can notice changes in their behavior.
Signs often prompt the conversation about getting help.

"I am unlearning the art of shrinking.
Teaching my bones to take up space without apology.
My heart is a wild animal
I've kept caged too long-
Now I'm opening all the doors.
Some days, I look in the mirror and see a stranger.
Other days, I see coming home.
Both are true.
Both are beautiful.
I am writing love letters to the parts of me I used to hide,
signing my name like I mean it.
The one who laughs too loud, and dreams too big, I am exactly enough."

Stop Apologizing and Start a Gratitude Practice

INSTEAD OF:
"SORRY I'M LATE."
"SORRY TO BOTHER YOU."
"SORRY I'M SUCH A MESS TODAY."
"SORRY, I TALK TOO MUCH."
"SORRY, I NEED HELP."

SAY THIS:
"THANKS FOR WAITING."
"DO YOU HAVE A MOMENT?"
"I'M HAVING A TOUGH DAY, BUT I'M HERE."
"THANKS FOR LISTENING— I REALLY NEEDED TO SHARE THAT."
"CAN YOU SUPPORT ME WITH THIS?"
