Parents, our SLP team wants you to hear this! These are our top 5 things we wish every parent knew!

1️⃣ All forms of communication count! Words, gestures, sounds, and alternative forms of communication are meaningful ways for your child to express themselves.

2️⃣ Speaking more than 1 language does not cause a speech delay.

3️⃣ Children develop at different rates and building spoken language takes time.

4️⃣ Early intervention is key. It’s never too early to seek support and begin asking questions about your child’s development.

5️⃣ If your child has a speech delay, it is not a reflection on you or your parenting skills.

We are here to support you and your child to build vocabulary, improve understanding, develop play skills, and ensure your child is confident and successful! Don’t hesitate to schedule your FREE speech screening!

Picky eating: 4 myths we hear all the time

“If they’re hungry enough, they’ll eat.”
Not necessarily! Especially when sensory or oral-motor challenges are involved.

“It’s just a phase.”
There are times when this is true! However, when your child’s safe or accepted food list is shrinking, it may be more than a phase.

“They’re being stubborn.”
Feeding difficulties are often rooted in skill-based feeding challenges. They may have skills that need support or are still developing.

“Just hide the vegetables.”
Hiding food doesn’t often build chewing skills, sensory tolerance or flexibility, which could be where the challenge comes in accepting different food groups and textures.

If mealtimes are feeling stressful or limited, feeding therapy can help! Reach out to learn more!

Did you know that listening and processing are two completely different skills? Your child might be able to hear you perfectly, but struggle to understand what you said. Auditory processing is how the brain understands what we hear. When it’s harder, our children may look distracted or forgetful even when trying their best.

Signs to look for:
✔️ Says “what” often
✔️ Struggles with multi-step directions
✔️ Seems tuned out in noisy places

If you’re noticing these signs or have any questions about your child’s receptive language and processing skills, our team of SLPs is here to help!

One powerful way to help your toddler follow directions is by telling them what TO do instead of what NOT to do.

When we say things like “Don’t run” or “Stop yelling,” toddlers often miss the message, because their brains are still developing the ability to process negative commands. Instead, try giving clear, positive directions like “Walk, please” or “Use a quiet voice.”

This simple shift helps your child understand exactly what’s expected and makes it more likely they’ll cooperate!

Looking for support for your child’s speech and language skills? Call our team today! We are offering FREE screenings at our clinic! (208) 467-1069

Speech sound errors are part of typical development, but there are times when speech therapy services are needed.

For example:
✔️ Saying “wabbit” for rabbit at 3–4 years old can be typical
⚠️ Saying it at 7 years old is usually not

The above timeline for speech sound development can help you tell the difference between developing sounds and delayed sound development.

If you’re wondering whether your child’s speech is on track, you don’t have to guess.

✨ We offer a free speech sound screener to help you get clear answers and next steps. Reach out to get started today!
