Develop an RPT Treatment Plan – personalizing the standard treatment plan for RPT.
Build Conceptual Pyramids - develop a conscious way of thinking and problem solving that describes each problem.
Actively Listen – using a communication process to increase understanding and remain engaged.
Recognize and lower stress through Relaxation Response Techniques and how to Bookmark Hot Issues that activate stress-related defensiveness.
How to use standard procedures in groups (or individual) sessions that help them stay on track and engaged in treatment with segments on Group Opening, Presentation, and Closure Procedures.
How to identify and clarify their Presenting Problems, review their Life and Addiction History, and Recovery and Relapse History to understand the core pattern of personality and lifestyle problems that created pain and problems and how to make a commitment to complete the RPT process.
How to identify, examine, understand, relate, and manage Warning Signs that can lead to relapse through segments on: Warning Sign Review, Initial Warning Sign List, Warning Sign Analysis, Final Warning Sign List and Critical Warning Signs, and Warning Sign Management.
Teach their clients/patients Recovery Planning including how to develop a schedule of recovery activities that can support the ongoing identification and management of the core personality and lifestyle problems that lead to relapse.

Dr. Grinstead has been helping people who are suffering with chronic pain and coexisting disorders for well over three decades. He was the Co-Founder and Chief Clinical Officer of A Healing Place - The Estates: A Triple Diagnosis Chronic Pain Management Program in Camarillo California.
He is author of the book Freedom from Suffering: A Journey of Hope as well as author of several other pain management books including Managing Pain and Coexisting Disorders, and the Addiction-Free Pain Management® Recovery Guide. Dr. Grinstead is also an internationally recognized expert in preventing relapse related to addiction and chronic pain disorders and is the developer of the Addiction-Free Pain Management® System. He has been working with chronic pain management, substance use disorders, eating addiction and coexisting mental and personality disorders since 1984.
Dr. Grinstead has a Bachelors Degree in Behavioral Science, a Masters Degree in Counseling Psychology and a Doctorate in Addictive Disorders (Dr. AD). He is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, (LMFT) a past California Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CADC-II), and a current Advanced Relapse Prevention Specialist (ACRPS). He served on the faculty of UC Santa Cruz Extension Alcohol and Drug Studies Program and also taught at Santa Clara University, UC Berkeley Extension and Stanford University Medical School and served on the faculty of University of Utah’s School on Alcoholism and Other Drug Dependencies as well as serving as an Adjunct Professor at Alliant University teaching Masters Level and Psy.D. Students the Treating the Addicted Family System course for the Marriage and Family Therapy track for five years.
Since 1996 Dr. Grinstead has conducted Addiction-Free Pain Management®; Managing Pain Medication in Recovery; Managing Pain and Prescription Drug Abuse; as well as Relapse Prevention Counseling, Relapse Prevention for Eating Addiction and Denial Management Counseling, seminars and certification training events for over forty thousand healthcare professionals therapists and counselors at more than 600 training seminars in key cities across the United States and Canada.
