In moments of despair, I draw strength from the resilient women in my lineage. Take Mary C. Laymance, born in 1862 in Tunnell Hill, Georgia, who endured the harrowing ordeal of her son's kidnapping by her husband, lasting eight agonizing days over Christmas. Yet, she emerged from this trial with resolve, filing for divorce after that. Reflecting on her courage, I find solace in knowing that if she could weather such adversity, I, too, can overcome any challenge that comes my way.

I just ordered a warrant for James Mann from the UK National Archives at Kew (aka James Coates, Martin Foy, and a newly found alias, James Agnew).

I’m sure he had an FBI file, as he was arrested and deported upon entry to the United States. James’s wife Edith and sister Ronnie (Veronica) were allowed entry. He was apparently pretending Ronnie was his daughter to make himself more trustworthy while on his worldwide con man journey.

Gephi is an open-source visualization platform that creates network graphs evidencing connections between data points—in this case, DNA.

The graphs produce clusters creating genetic networks and have two parts:
o Nodes: represent matches—circles
o Edges: means in common with—lines

Clusters' evidence shared matches with a most recent common ancestor--though they can be from different generations.

Network graphs are an excellent tool for visualizing matches. Instead of spending hours or days sorting matches by hand, looking for a connection, Gephi does the work for you.

If you're interested in purchasing a network graph, please email or send a message!

Do you have any brickwalls in a burned county? Have you researched in a burned county? Are you positive record loss is causing the brick wall and assuming all records are lost? Dealing with a county or region that has experienced record loss can be overwhelming and cause a diversion from the research objective we are trying to answer.

When researching in a burned county, take a deep breath and don’t stress–there are resources to help genealogists identify the extent of the record loss and what collections are still available.

A quick note about the importance of correspondence with kin!

The stars finally aligned! I have been looking and dreaming about finding a photograph of that scoundrel second great-grandfather, and it happened! A cousin and descendant of his other family sent me one last night—it was totally unexpected.

Nana and her friends dressed up as flowers 🌸

The picture was probably snapped during elementary school, so 1934 or thereabouts. Nana attended school in Prague, Lincoln County, Oklahoma, at the time. The other little girls were likely her classmates in Prague.

I thought it would be interesting to identify the elementary school she attended at the time; unfortunately, the school record (linked below) doesn’t identify the school’s name. Using the photo and school record as a clue, I have created a research question:

In 1934, what school did Wynona Cole, born about 1927 in Lincoln County, Oklahoma, attend?

The next step is to create a research plan to identify sources that will answer the research question—check back tomorrow for part II.
