Vasovagal syncope (passing out) occurs from the neurological system’s response to a trigger. These triggers can be anything from the sight of blood, to needles, to excessive heat exposure, etc.
As one of our major tools of the trade is a needle, we see this reaction commonly in our chair. Most times, this reaction is not due to a drop in blood sugar, arrhythmia, cardiovascular or neurological concern.
Placing the patient in the trendelenburg position (feet higher than the head) to increase blood flow to the brain is the best way to help these patients. Our office purchased special chairs to allow for this quick position change.
** There are, of course, other causes of syncope that should be evaluated and treated by medical providers.
