The Communication Classroom

The Communication Classroom Our goal at the Communication Classroom is to work with clients and their family to provide individualized communication therapy.

I'm Katelyn, I am a speech language pathologist providing in-home therapy services in the Bartlett area (including Bartlett, Bloomingdale, Carol Stream, Hanover Park, Streamwood, Roselle, Glendale Heights, Wheaton, West Chicago, South Elgin, and Winfield) I am passionate about working with Autistic individuals, functional communication, AAC devices, gestalt language processing (scripting), high school language skills, and pragmatic language (through self-advocacy, problem solving, executive functioning, and perspective taking). We never aim to FIX a child, but to develop skills that build confidence in their communication and relationships. We prioritize connection over compliance, honoring communication, teaching self-advocacy, and building communicative and bodily autonomy. We offer private pay, in-home, neurodiversity-affirming communication intervention

I know I already posted about The Child Led Autism Summit, but in case you missed it -

August 18th-20th I will be a speaker for The Child Led Autism Summit. Tickets are free! The summit topics are dedicated to educating about child-led approaches to therapy and teaching. It’s perfect for professionals and parents. All presentations are pre-recorded so you can pick and choose which topics feel interesting to you!

This has made me think about the time one of my high schoolers told me I was a Chaotic Good. I didn’t know what that meant lol. It’s a Dungeons and Dragons alignment that means a character is good-hearted and tries to do what is right but doesn’t always adhere to rules or societal norms. If you know me professionally, you know that’s A) a huge compliment in regards to my therapuetic philosophies and B ) probably pretty accurate. This was a huge confirmation that I was switching my therapy style to embrace neurodiversity and the natural ways my students’ brains worked. They saw it and felt it also.

If you want to be viewed as a Chaotic Good for your students too, I highly recommend signing up for this summit!

My favorite part of owning a private practice, is running it how I WANT. I use systems that work for my brain and for my clients' brains. I want my clients and their families to feel safe, comfortable, and SEEN when they choose The Communication Classroom.

Your child didn't sleep and had an awful day at school. You don't think speech will be beneficial for them today? No worries, no charge! (Sure, if it becomes a pattern we discuss cancellation fees and problem solve scheduling or parent coaching options)

We take breaks! (This actually helps with the amount of cancellations I get!). I schedule breaks around holidays, transitions (no speech the first full week of school), etc. It's different, but clients love it!

Use silence to the extreme some days! Build that connection and just enjoy each other!

Let's use what you have! I want parents to feel comfortable modeling language for their child. Sure, I will bring some items that may entice more communication, but I want to empower families to use connection over materials for progress!

Lastly - I show up as neurodivergent me. I stim, I talk about my experiences, I am open about difficulties (aka PLEASE email or text me whatever schedule change you just told me even though I have my phone on me).

If this sounds like a good fit for your family, book a consult call today!

I was at Walmart this week and found...this. Each April I hope for better. Baby steps, I suppose! Just a reminder - advocacy should amplify autistic voices, teach true acceptance, and promote authenticity 🧩🚫

Here at The Comunication Classroom, we support authenticity and self-advocacy! We listen to the populations we service!

(also if you see any typos - no you didn't 😂)

I am very passionate about neurodiversity and education/advocacy for brains that work differently. A huge piece of this is sharing about how my brain works, what I need to best access my environment, and relating it to my students for other professionals. I had the awesome opportunity to share about my diagnostic journey with Dan at The Aspie World. This conversation was supposed to dig deeper into how I mask, how I’m learning to unmask, and more. However, in true ADHD fashion, we got a little off topic 🤪 but the information and experiences shared here are great insight still into neurodivergent brains.

We often associate AAC with nonspeaking individuals. However, we all use forms of AAC. Texting, emails/letters, gestures, facial expressions are all ways we can communicate without using our spoken language.

The Communication Classroom believes that ALL individuals should know their options when it comes to multi-modal communication. We are happy to help you, or a loved one, explore different options of communication. We strive to make augmentative and alternative communication accessible to individuals who are nonspeaking, limitedly speaking, and unreliably speaking.
