If you're finding it especially difficult to fall asleep, you’re not alone. Many older adults deal with insomnia or difficulty staying asleep. One tip? Getting worried, stressed, or staring at the clock will actually make it worse!
😴
Getting worked up will only increase your stress levels, increase your cortisol, and activate your sympathetic nervous system, continuing the never-ending cycle of stress and not sleeping. In fact, cortisol is the last thing you want around sleep, as it known for being part of our fight or flight response... not exactly great for sleep.
😴
Instead, of getting more worked up trying to sleep, do something else. Read a book, do a puzzle. It might even help you to get out of bed, sit on the couch and do something that is not the most stimulating thing, yet will help you get your mind off of the clock and worrying about falling asleep (what have you been putting off?) You might just find yourself falling asleep folding your laundry or doing your taxes tonight! Let us know if this helps in the comments below!

🧠 The Women's Alzheimer's Movement shared the following Brain Health Tips:

The causes of Alzheimer’s are often multifactorial and related to what we eat, our activity levels, the quality of our sleep and how well we manage stress. The good news is you can do several things to protect your memory right now. This is true even if you’re at risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease.

1. Get moving
Research shows that regular physical activity helps keep you mentally sharp by increasing blood flow and oxygen to your brain. What’s the best form of exercise? Any active activity you’ll actually do!

2. Eat smart
They say, “You are what you eat.” And the food we incorporate into our diets does have a profound impact on our bodies. But can certain foods also boost the health of our brains. Some diets have been shown to provide a variety of health benefits. The Mediterranean diet — which focuses on foods like vegetables, whole grains and olive oil — is known for being heart-healthy. But it can also be good for your brain, by minimizing white and gray matter changes.

3. Control risks
Seek treatment for high blood pressure and diabetes. When you have diabetes, your body builds a resistance to insulin. Insulin resistance is tied closely to inflammation, and we know that inflammation helps create protein buildup in your brain that disrupts several of its functions.

4. Rest well
Recent evidence suggests that insomnia and OSA may have deleterious effects on your brain.

5. Keep sharp
There are several online brain-training programs developed by scientists to challenge your brain in fun ways. Learn a new hobby or skill. Maybe try taking a class. Pushing your brain to learn new things creates new pathways in your brain and keeps your mind sharp.

6. Stay connected
Maintaining a robust social life and staying socially connected with others can bolster your brain function. When you communicate with others, you challenge your mind to interpret verbal and visual cues and respond to them accordingly.

A Winter Wellness Tip: Keep Moisturized! 🤚🧴
Senior skin loses moisture much more easily, and dryness (xerosis) is a direct or contributing cause of many types of skin conditions. Regular moisturizing helps maintain a healthy moisture barrier and protect the skin from harsh winter conditions.
