At Educational Advocacy & Consulting, we understand the challenges that come with trying to secure the right school services for your child. From identification to implementation, there’s a lot to navigate — and the process can be overwhelming for parents who don’t understand the ins and outs of the school system. As an expert group of Advocates and Educational Consultants serving the Chicago and Washington DC areas, we’ll assist your family through the entire process of procuring services for your child. If your child is currently receiving services, we can also work with you to make sure that he or she is getting the appropriate services for their needs. This can be in the form of:

Receiving accommodations under section 504, designed for students who have a “physical or mental impairment” that “substantially limits one or more major life activities”

Obtaining a complete evaluation to determine if your child has a disability in need of Special Education supports and services through an IEP (Individualized Educational Plan)

When you work with EAC, we’ll conduct observations, complete a thorough review of your child’s records, refer your family to outside providers if needed, and collaborate in a cooperative manner with your child’s school team. If you are struggling to come to an agreement with your school district regarding services, we can intervene through Early Resolution, Mediation, and Formal State Complaints. In addition to our advocacy services, we’re very excited to announce that we’ll soon be opening our Dyslexia Center! Here, we’ll offer high-quality reading and writing instruction to help children successfully meet the literary standards in school and for the future. Creating the most appropriate opportunities for your child is our mission and we’re here to help with whatever you need to make that happen. Visit our website for more information or call (773-230-8320) or email us today to set up a free 30-minute consultation. We look forward to getting to know you and your child!

Accommodations get talked about a lot, but rarely explained clearly. Many parents are left guessing what their child actually needs, what the school can provide, and how to tell if the current plan is doing its job.

The truth? Accommodations aren’t about making things easier, they’re about giving your child fair access to learning. And when they’re chosen thoughtfully, they can completely change a student’s school experience.

If you’re looking at your child’s IEP or 504 and thinking, “I’m not sure this is enough,” that’s a sign worth paying attention to. The right supports do make a difference, and you don’t have to sort through it alone.

If you’re feeling stuck or want a second set of eyes, we offer free 30-minute consultations. Link in bio.

⭐ Secret Menu Series: Item 24 ⭐

The 24th item on the menu in our Secret Menu Series: Understanding the “Notice of Conference”

Before every IEP meeting, you’ll receive a Notice of Conference. It not only lists the date and time, but also everyone who plans to attend. Take a moment to review that list. You should know each person’s role, and it is appropriate to ask questions if someone is unfamiliar to you.

If an individual shows up who was not listed, you can respectfully request that they not participate. You are entitled to know exactly who will be at the table for your child.

Reading doesn’t come naturally for every child—and that’s okay. Many students simply need a more intentional, research-supported approach to build the foundational skills that make reading “click.”

Structured literacy offers that clarity.

It breaks reading and writing into teachable, understandable steps and uses multisensory methods to help skills stick. It’s grounded in decades of research and supports learners with dyslexia and students who benefit from more explicit instruction.

At Educational Advocacy and Consulting, we partner with families and educators to make this approach accessible, compassionate, and tailored to each child’s needs. If you’re exploring the best way to support a developing reader, we’re here to help.

Holiday breaks can be exciting, but they also bring big changes, especially for neurodivergent kids who rely on routine.

A little preparation and predictability can make this time feel more manageable for the whole family.

If the transition out of school (and back into it) feels overwhelming for your child, you’re not alone. Gentle support, clearer expectations, and a bit of structure can go a long way in helping them feel grounded during the holidays.

And if you’re ever unsure how to navigate these seasonal transitions, we’re here to support you and your child every step of the way.

As President of an Advocacy Firm, I stay away from posting political rhetoric. I will not, however, sit by and say nothing about the leader of our country using the R word.
This word reinforces stereotypes that we have long fought to erase. The context in which this individual used this word suggested that it means incompetent or even worse. Nothing could be further from the truth.
When a child uses such a word, we, as parents, educators, advocates, and citizens, teach them to do better. We make sure they understand that these types of words are hurtful, disrespectful, and humiliating to say the least. It's hard to imagine that this lesson might need to be taught to a leader of a nation, but if it does, instead of making excuses, I am hopeful that those around him will try to teach him or at least tell him that this is not going to be tolerated.
No matter what, sitting back and just getting angry is not working.

⭐ Secret Menu Series: Item 23 ⭐

The 23rd item on the menu in our Secret Menu Series: Requesting Trauma-Informed Expertise

When a child shows challenging behavior, especially when trauma is part of their history, typical behavior systems like PBIS aren’t always effective. In some cases, they can even escalate the situation.

In these moments, your child needs support from someone trained specifically in trauma-informed care. And as a parent, you absolutely have the right to request that an expert with this training be brought onto the team.

A trauma-informed specialist can help ensure interventions are appropriate, responsive, and aligned with what your child truly needs to access a Free Appropriate Public Education.

🍎 Questions or need help with this kind of request? Contact us for a free 30-minute consultation.

These signs don’t diagnose dyslexia on their own, but they can help families know what to look for. And understanding what’s going on is the first step toward getting the right support.

If you have questions about your child’s reading, we’re always here to talk through your concerns.

Dyslexia isn’t a limitation...it’s a different way of thinking. And for Jay Leno, that difference became the foundation of an entire career.

Before he was a comedian or TV host, Jay struggled in school. Reading was hard, traditional learning didn’t come naturally, and he often felt out of step with the expectations around him. But dyslexia also pushed him to see the world differently, noticing details others missed, finding humor in ordinary moments, and learning to think quickly on his feet.

That creative, flexible thinking eventually became his greatest strength.

At EAC, we see that same potential in every child with dyslexia. With the right support, their “different” becomes their superpower.

If you’re looking for guidance, evaluations, or evidence-based reading support, our Dyslexia Center is here to help.

We’ve been feeling especially grateful this week...for the parents who invite us into their child’s story and for the students who remind us why this work matters.

Hope you get a chance to rest and breathe this holiday. Happy Thanksgiving from all of us at EAC. 🧡
