It’s not just what you eat that can have a positive effect on your body: It’s what you drink, too. Research shows that adding just a couple of ingredients to a regular glass of water can yield significant health benefits, including reduced bloating, increased energy, and so much more. Adding cucumber and lemon slices to your water, most notably reduced oxidative stress, which can lead to inflammation. On top of its anti-inflammatory benefits, cucumber-lemon water can also ease digestive symptoms like bloating. Plus, there are vitamins A, C, and K, which increase your antioxidants, helping to reduce the risk of cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and other serious health concerns.

Regular consumption of potato-based treats (French fries) raises your odds of type 2 diabetes by 20%, new research shows. Swapping out those fries for whole-grain foods could lower your odds for the blood sugar disease by 19%, the same study found. Small changes in our daily diet can have an important impact on risk of type 2 diabetes. The study from Harvard found that replacing three French fry orders each week, cut the odds of type 2 diabetes by up to 1/5, or 19 percent. When it came to potatoes, how they were cooked does matter: eating potatoes baked, boiled, or mashed had no influence on diabetes risk.

One of the reasons we overthink is because we are afraid to make the wrong decision; therefore, we don’t make one at all. Decisions come with change. To stop overthinking, we must make a decision to interrupt the current thought pattern. Practical ways for us to stop overthinking include: prayer, journaling, memorize scripture, worship, and counseling; just not all at once. Psalm 94:19 (NASB) says, “When my anxious thoughts multiply within me, Your comfort delights my soul.”

New research has identified a specific group of brain cells that acts like an internal alarm system, connecting physical pain to emotional distress and threat memories. The discovery could explain why some people develop chronic pain conditions or become hypersensitive to threats after experiencing trauma. The CGRP (calcitonin gene-related peptide) neurons don’t just transmit pain signals; they actively create the emotional associations that turn physical pain into lasting psychological distress. Individuals with chronic pain conditions like migraines and fibromyalgia often experience hypersensitivity to normal sensory stimuli. The study found that genes linked to migraines are highly active in CGRP neurons, pointing to these cells’ role in pain hypersensitivity. (NOTE: This study can be found in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.)

Getting a Parkinson’s diagnosis today means waiting for telltale symptoms like tremors and stiffness to appear, often years after brain damage has already begun. Researchers from the Universities of Bristol and Manchester discovered that Parkinson’s patients produce different oils on their skin compared to healthy people. These oils, called sebum, carry a distinct scent that trained dogs can learn to recognize from simple cotton swab samples taken from patients’ backs. This altered sebum composition can appear even before the characteristic motor symptoms of Parkinson’s emerge. While dogs won’t replace neurologists, they could serve as valuable screening tools. Early detection could enable earlier treatment and potentially slow disease progression.

God gave you your emotions for a reason, and he wants you to worship him emotionally, with all your heart and all your mind. God is an emotional God. He feels joy, grief, pain, and He gets frustrated with people. The only reason you have emotions is because you’re made in God’s image. If God wasn’t an emotional God, you wouldn’t have any emotions. Your emotions may not always seem like a gift, but even the negative ones have a purpose in your life. God really cares about what you think and feel! Psalm 7:9 (NLT) says, “You look deep within the mind and heart, O righteous God.”

Scientists at Duke University have discovered that specialized cells in the colon can detect signals from bacteria and send rapid messages to the brain that control how much we eat. When this bacterial sensing system breaks down, we eat more food and gain significantly more weight than normal. The discovery could help explain why disruptions in gut bacteria are linked to obesity and eating disorders. This bacterial sensing system operates completely separately from immune responses. When researchers blocked immune signaling pathways, the feeding effects remained unchanged. Current weight loss medications often target brain chemistry or slow digestion, but this research points toward a completely different approach: manipulating the gut’s bacterial sensing system. Future treatments might focus on enhancing the natural communication between gut microbes and appetite control centers in the brain.

Embarrassment is a universal, visceral and oddly contagious emotion. It’s what psychologists call a self-conscious emotion. This means it hinges on our awareness of ourselves through others’ eyes. Embarrassment isn’t usually moral — it’s about looking awkward or inept. Context matters too. We feel more embarrassed in front of people whose opinions we value or who hold power. Yet while embarrassment may feel uncomfortable, it actually has surprising social and psychological benefits. Visible signs of embarrassment (blushing) are often seen as signs of honesty and generosity. People who showed embarrassment were seen as more trustworthy and cooperative. However, while moderate embarrassment is healthy and constructive, excessive fear of it can become harmful – crossing into social anxiety.

Be careful how you think, because what you think shapes your life. What you think impacts what you believe, which impact how you feel, which impacts what you do. By the power of God, you can actually choose what you think about and what you think about determines how you live. Let God change you by renewing your mind, by stopping the negative lies and replacing them with Godly truth. Romans 12:2 (CEV) says, “Don't be like the people of this world, but let God change the way you think. Then you will know how to do everything that is good and pleasing to Him.”

If you like going on walks regularly, you’ll love this study. Scientists say that as little as 15 minutes of brisk walking each day was linked to a nearly 20% lower risk of dying from any cause. Researchers from Vanderbilt University Medical Center report that even modest amounts of fast-paced walking could make a meaningful difference in communities where gym memberships, personal trainers, and fancy fitness equipment often aren’t realistic options. The protective effects appeared regardless of participants’ starting health status. People with existing conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, or heart disease saw even larger reductions in death risk from fast walking than their healthier counterparts, though everyone benefited. (The study defined “fast walking” as activities like climbing stairs, brisk walking, or exercising; essentially any walking that gets the heart pumping a bit faster.)

If you’re feeling blue, your gut health could be to blame. There’s a strong connection between the gut microbiome and mental well-being. Gastroparesis (also called delayed gastric emptying) is a digestive condition that can negatively affect your mental health. Gastroparesis slows or stops food movement from your stomach to your small intestine, impacting the gut-brain connection. Physical symptoms of gastroparesis include nausea, vomiting, early or prolonged fullness, belching, bloating, and abdominal pain. It’s worth noting that weight-loss drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy have been linked to cases of gastroparesis. If you’re experiencing these symptoms along with poor mental health, consult a gastroenterologist.
