Florida Death Certificates: What You Need to Know
At Legacy Options Funeral and Cremation Services, we understand how important it is to have accurate information during a difficult time. One key part of the process after a loved oneโs passing is obtaining death certificates.
In Florida, death certificates are ordered through the Florida Department of Health at the Vital Statistics Office. Each county may have slightly different fees, but as part of our service, we handle the ordering process on your behalf. We obtain certified copies for $10 each.
There are two types of death certificates available in Florida:
๐น Long Form โ Includes the cause and manner of death and the full Social Security number.
๐น Short Form โ Excludes cause of death and the Social Security number.
Most families order an average of 6โ8 copies, typically split between long and short forms. We can help guide you on how many you may need based on your situation.
You'll need certified copies for tasks such as:
โ
๏ธ Settling bank accounts
โ
๏ธFiling life insurance claims
โ
๏ธHandling 401(k) or retirement accounts
โ
๏ธ Transferring vehicle titles
โ
๏ธ Managing estate and legal affairs
๐กNote: You do not need to send a copy to Social Security. We automatically notify them when the number is entered into Floridaโs electronic death registration system.
Weโre here to make this process as smooth as possible for you. If you have questions about ordering death certificates or need help determining how many you need, donโt hesitate to reach out.
