We use it when someone has to face something tough or unpleasant head-on.

Where did it come from?

Back in the days before anesthesia, soldiers undergoing battlefield surgery were sometimes given a bullet to literally bite down on to help endure the pain. 😬

Thankfully, we’ve come a long way in medicine… but the phrase stuck!
