Did you know that there are specialty-trained physical therapists who specialize in scoliosis treatment? For children and adults!?!? There are methodologies that exist to help correct or mitigate progression of a scoliosis curve, and these exercises are individualized for the patient based on a variety of factors, including one’s age, stage in growth, flexibility, and curve severity.

Scoliosis-specific exercise programs utilize a variety of positions in conjunction with specific breath work and postural awareness to strengthen the convexity while lengthening the concavity. Depending on the needs of the child, a therapist may also utilize traditional core strengthening or mobility work to further stabilize the spine and surrounding joints, especially in children who are more sedentary or hyper mobile.

Because of the complexity of the exercises, these kinds of programs are highly specific and require a high level of focus and intensity in order to maximize their efficacy, so it is important to make sure your child is focused during their home exercises.

We should meet patients where they are in their scoliosis journey, and curating a program that is achievable and comprehensive can be a great way to instill confidence and self-awareness!

Did you know that it is estimated that nearly 9 million people in the United States have scoliosis?

Up to 80% of all scoliosis are classified as adolescent idiopathic scoliosis, meaning that there is no identifiable cause for the development of scoliosis during adolescence. These cases are most often caught between the ages of 10 and 16, and the presentation can vary widely between girls and boys.

So, what is there to know about adolescent idiopathic scoliosis? And what treatments are available after diagnosis?

June is Scoliosis Awareness Month, and we will be using this month as an opportunity to raise awareness and provide resources and education for those in our community! Scoliosis can easily slip under the radar until a curve has progressed significantly, so early diagnosis is key to starting effective treatment as early as possible. Whether a child has a small or large curve, having useful information regarding potential treatments as a patient or parent when creating an action plan is important! Summer vacation is just around the corner for many kids this time of year, and while summer may bring about images of beach days and cookouts, parents should know that this is one of the best times of the year to check your child for scoliosis! Spending more time with your kids while they are playing by the pool and outside is a great opportunity to see how they move and spot if there is anything out of the ordinary with their posture! The time off from school also allows kids to start therapy and treatment for scoliosis without interruption during the school year, so reach out to your child’s pediatrician or physical therapist this summer to check for scoliosis.
