Baby Boomers Beware: More Americans Than Ever Before Now at Higher Risk for Common Blood Vessel Diseases

According to a new national survey released today by the Society for Vascular Surgery (SVS), nearly one in three Americans at the highest risk for developing blood vessel (vascular) diseases have not heard of any of the most common conditions, like peripheral artery disease and carotid artery disease. This comes at a time when by 2030 more than 100 million people in the U.S. will be reaching an age associated with a high risk of vascular diseases, meaning more people than ever before may require care from a specialist yet a critical gap exists.

What is Transcarotid Artery Revascularization?

Transcarotid Artery Revascularization (TCAR) is a clinically proven, minimally invasive procedure to treat carotid artery disease and help prevent future strokes. TCAR is unique in that blood flow is temporarily reversed during the procedure so that any bits of plaque that may break off are diverted away from the brain.

A comprehensive map of cells from diabetic foot ulcers reveals factors critical for successful wound healing

Researchers used state-of-the-art technologies to develop a detailed and comprehensive view of diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) at the cellular and molecular level and reveal elements that promote successful wound healing. DFUs are a devastating complication of diabetes with limited treatment options. Even though most foot ulcers heal with appropriate management, recurrence is common after initial healing and in worst cases leads to lower extremity amputations, significantly affecting quality of life and putting a huge financial burden on the health care system.

Vascular Surgeons Believe Legs – And Lives – Are Worth Saving!

Underserved communities continue to struggle with health care disparities such as diabetes and peripheral arterial disease (PAD), which can lead to limb amputation.

Patients in these communities can rely on vascular surgeons, especially those affiliated with the Society for Vascular Surgery (SVS), who work tirelessly to offer patients a range of resources and initiatives aimed at limb salvage.

These vascular surgeons stand up to health care inequalities and help patients avoid life-altering outcomes by providing tailored assistance and support.

NEW DATA: 70% OF AMERICANS UNAWARE OF COMMON VASCULAR DISEASE THAT IS ONE OF THE LEADING CAUSES OF AMPUTATION

According to a new national survey released today by the PAD Pulse Alliance, 70% of Americans are unaware of peripheral artery disease (PAD) – the most common vascular disease in which leg arteries become narrowed, reducing or cutting off blood flow, contributing to 400 amputations performed each day in the United States. The top risk factors for PAD are common chronic health conditions that disproportionately impact underserved communities. Yet among Black and Hispanic adults, nearly 80% report never having a doctor or healthcare provider discuss PAD with them – underscoring the need to start the conversation.
