Not all wounds are visible. People in rehab face battles every day, fighting cravings, facing their past, and trying to believe in their future. Your words, your presence, and your empathy can be part of what helps them keep going.

Alcohol may feel sedating, but it fragments sleep and disrupts normal stages. It suppresses REM early in the night, then causes “rebound” awakenings and vivid dreams later. It also relaxes airway muscles (worsening snoring/sleep apnea) and acts as a diuretic, leading to nighttime trips to the bathroom. Heavy use can trigger memory blackouts. For better sleep, avoid alcohol 3–4 hours before bed, keep a consistent schedule, and seek help if you rely on alcohol to fall asleep.

Cross-addiction, also called addiction substitution, occurs when someone in recovery replaces one substance with another or with a compulsive behavior because the same brain reward pathways are activated. It raises relapse risk, complicates withdrawal and medication decisions, and can mask ongoing harm. Recognizing cross-addiction allows for comprehensive assessment, integrated care plans, and relapse-prevention strategies that address all substances and high-risk behaviors.

We know here at GateHouse Treatment that recovery is possible. Our comprehensive recovery program allows the struggling addict to find hope for a healthy future, overcome their past, and lay the foundation here for a promising and fulfilling life ahead. We make it our mission at GateHouse Treatment to give you or a loved one the hope you need to begin your path to recovery.
GateHouse Treatment is a facility of GateHouse Treatment. GateHouse Treatment was originally founded by Nathan Irvine, in Nashua, New Hampshire, soon after he found his own recovery. He wanted to help others who suffered from the same disease of addiction he did. In 2009, GateHouse Treatment was started as a sober home to allow men to live in a safe and structured environment to aide them in early recovery. Today, GateHouse Treatment has grown into a multi-facility treatment center designed to lead men through their early sobriety and help them reintegrate into society while maintaining long-term recovery.
Our treatment method is to approach the mind, body, and soul. We recognize addiction as a disease that mentally, physically, and emotionally changes the individual suffering into a person they or loved ones around can no longer recognize.
We know addiction does not discriminate.
All walks of life, all races, all genders and ages are affected by this cunning disease that has become a national crisis. Our goal at GateHouse Treatment is to provide help to all those that reach out.
Reach out to GateHouse Treatment today if you or a loved one is suffering.
