📰 "Nominal vs Absolute Pore Size Rating - What's the Difference?"

One of the key features of any filter is its pore size rating, which informs the user about the particle size it can effectively remove. However, there are certain aspects of the pore size rating that need to be carefully considered. Filter manufacturers typically specify pore size ratings as either Absolute or Nominal. In general, a Nominal rating indicates the approximate particle size that the filter can capture, while an Absolute rating indicates the largest particle that can pass through the filter.

📰 "Pressure Decay Testing: Why, When, and How?"

To maintain the integrity of filters, especially hydrophilic ones, testing before and after operation is essential. Two primary methods for testing are Forward Flow Air Diffusion and Bubble Point. Forward Flow Air Diffusion involves wetting the filters, pressurizing the upstream side to 70-80% of the membrane bubble point, and measuring the air flow through the filter using a mass flow meter or automated integrity tester. This method correlates with performance criteria like bacteria retention. The Bubble Point method also requires wetting the filters and gradually increasing air pressure until bulk gas flow is observed, either visually or with an automated tester, to determine the bubble point value, which indicates the largest pore size in the membrane. Both methods require expensive equipment and complex system installation. A more cost-effective alternative is Pressure Decay Testing, which operates similarly to Forward Flow Air Diffusion but uses only a pressurized gas source and pressure gauge. It measures the pressure loss over time due to gas diffusion, providing a budget-friendly option for integrity testing.
