Hope to stay young as long as possible? How you age is NOT "all in your genes" and you have more control over that than you may think. This research reveals the link between increased intestinal permeability ("leaky gut") and accelerated biological aging. When your body ages faster than your chronological years you have greater risk for diseases seen more frequently in older adults, and you may end up looking much older than you are....

Do you need to get rid of excess weight? Research from Nottingham Trent University shows it starts with good gut health.

Bad news first: dysbiosis can lead to the wall of the gut becoming overly permeable, and this intestinal permeability or "leaky gut" allows endotoxins and macromolecules to escape into the blood stream -- directly leading to obesity, as well as other acute and chronic health problems. "Gut microbe fragments that enter the blood stream reduce normal fat cell function and their metabolic activity, which is exacerbated with weight gain, contributing to increased diabetes risk," said lead researcher Professor Mark Christian, a scientist in Nottingham Trent University's School of Science and Technology.

The good news is this can be addressed. Reducing gut endotoxins and improving gut health is what we do regularly at AIMA Functional Medicine, and we can help. Dr. Alice Murphy, a postdoctoral research fellow at Nottingham Trent University added, "These studies highlight that despite gaining weight, if we lose that weight, we can reverse the damage our gut can pose to our fat cells, which ultimately will have a major impact on our health and the benefits of weight loss."

Scientists at Nottingham Trent University found that microbe fragments called endotoxin enter the blood stream and directly impact how well fat cells function, including their capacity to be metabolically active.

Granulomas! 😲What the body is capable of is simply astounding. These are small, walled-off lesions created by your immune system to keep GI pathogens in check and control a gut infection, and your monocytes sustain them, keeping them from busting open and infecting your system. Brilliant! This is just one of the many things your immune system can do for you in the case of certain types of GI infections. Take care of your gut, and give us a call AIMA Functional Medicineif you want to learn what may be contributing to your GI symptoms and want a plan to address it.

Way to go, Mass General Brigham! Researchers in this study found that Parabacteroides distasonis—a bacterium associated with gut wall health—was positively associated with postoperative delirium. This study offers clues into why some older adults have trouble recovering from anesthesia. AIMA Functional Medicine specializes in gut microbiome health and we love to hear about this kind of research, which will ultimately drive more personalized care in conventional medical practice. Curious about what's going on your gut? Come see us! https://medicalxpress.com/news/2023-05-gut-bacteria-contribute-delirium-elderly.html

Postoperative delirium—a sudden, fluctuating and typically reversible disturbance of mental status in patients that occurs after anesthetized surgery—is a common postoperative complication. The causes, progression and biological signatures are largely unknown, however.

Gut microbiota play an IMMENSE role in your overall systemic immune health! The researcher in this study say if we want to fight infection what's needed is a more holistic view of how things are functioning. This is the approach we use at AIMA Functional Medicine -- and we are delighted that researchers are starting to catch on:

"The signal that we've seen in our research is that a family of bacteria, that naturally live in the gut, seems to be important for directing the immune system," says Jared Schlechte, Ph.D. candidate and first author of the study. https://www.nature.com/articles/s41591-023-02243-5

Dysbiosis of the gut microbiome in critically ill patients, coupled with impaired innate immune responses, may lower the barrier to acquiring infectious pathogens in the hospital setting.
