In a recent Heart of Hamlin podcast episode published by our friends at the Lincoln County Health Dept WV, Retina Labs' very own Director of Operations, Brandon Condiff, shares why routine diabetic eye exams are critical when it comes to protecting long-term vision health and improving access to care, especially in rural and underserved communities.
Diabetic retinopathy, which is the leading cause of preventable blindness among working-age adults in the U.S., remains one of the most serious and common complications of diabetes.
Given its notorious reputation for silent disease progression, diabetic retinopathy often develops without showing any noticeable symptoms until it has reached an advanced stage. When detected early, however, up to 95% of cases involving diabetes-related vision loss can be successfully prevented through prompt treatment.
Compared to routine vision checks, the diabetic eye exam retinal imaging process has the capability to uncover various incidental findings beyond diabetic retinopathy alone, where retina specialists may also see early signs of:
*Glaucoma
*Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD)
*Diabetic Macular Edema (DME)
By expanding access to diabetic eye exams for all health plan members regardless of demographics, Retina Labs is helping more people protect their eyesight - one preventive screening at a time.
