Yoga isn’t about doing more.
It’s about learning how to do life… with less strain.
Lately I’ve been reminded of this in a very real way—
busy days, full schedules, and still finding a way to move, breathe, and stay steady.
That’s what we practice on the mat:
✔ Strength without tension
✔ Mobility without force
✔ Breath that steadies the mind
✔ A nervous system that can downshift when life speeds up
You don’t have to be flexible.
You don’t have to be advanced.
You just have to show up.

Not too shabby for pushing 70… 😉

This afternoon’s “warm-up” before teaching yoga:✔️ Wheelbarrow loaded with Timothy grass for the goats✔️ Dogs leading the way✔️ 1.39 miles around the farm✔️ Finished in under 30 minutes

No gym. No machines. Just real life movement.

Average heart rate stayed right in that sweet aerobic zone, a few natural pushes higher on the hills and with the load—exactly the kind of work that builds cardiovascular health, strength, and longevity all at once.

This is what I call the Farm Facet of Fitness:🌿 Functional movement🌿 Nervous system regulation🌿 Strength + balance in a natural environment🌿 Purpose-driven activity (the goats were happy too!)

Fitness doesn’t have to be complicated.It just has to be consistent… and meaningful.

And then—take that energy and bring it to the mat.

Longevity isn’t complicated… but it does require consistency.

Today was a good reminder.

Walked into my doctor’s visit, a little rushed, a little stimulated… blood pressure read higher than normal.Two minutes of slow breathing later — 110/67.

👉 The body responds when we give it what it needs.

What moves the needle?• Daily movement (strength + mobility + walking)• Simple, whole foods (lean protein, vegetables, fruit, healthy fats)• Nervous system regulation (breathing, meditation, slowing down)• Consistency over perfection

No extremes. Just steady practice.

At 69, I’m not chasing fitness… I’m building longevity.

🌿 Today was a reminder… sometimes the answer isn’t to push harder—it’s to step outside.

I wasn’t feeling my best earlier. Low energy. A bit off.

So I walked.

Out on the farm… fed the goats and chickens… let the dogs run… and just moved through it.

🚶‍♂️ About a mile and a half🌳 Uneven ground, natural balance work🧠 Nervous system settling instead of stimulation

And along the way…

🐢 Turtles lined up on a log🦆 A Muscovy duck gliding across the pond🦦 A young otter surfacing and diving🪵 A pileated woodpecker working the rafters

By the time I got back—energy restored. Clearer. Better.

This is the kind of movement I believe in more and more:

✔ Not forced✔ Not exhausting✔ Actually restorative

Movement that supports balance, longevity, and the nervous system—not just muscles.

And yes… even a sense of something greater in it all.

Same message:

👉 Don’t go harder… go smarter.

🐢 Rest when it’s time🦆 Move when it’s time

That’s how you build strength, energy, and longevity.

Not extremes… rhythm.

✔️ I skipped a packed gym yesterday, walked instead, recovered✔️ Today, I’m ready to go again

👉 That’s the model.

🐢 Yesterday I saw four turtles lined up on a log right off my back deck.

Looked like they were doing nothing but sunning.

This morning, a little baby one was out there moving up the log, taking her place.

And it hit me…

They don’t just sit on the log.They move.They swim.They forage. They obviously make babies. And then they come back and rest, and bask in the sun.

👉 They alternate.

That’s what we get wrong in fitness.

We think it’s either: Push harder or Do nothing!

But the body doesn’t work that way.

It thrives on rhythm: Move when it’s time. Recover when it’s time. Repeat

Yesterday, I skipped a packed gym, walked instead, ate well, and recovered.

Today? I’m ready again.

🐢 Maybe it’s not about going harder.

Maybe it’s about learning when to be on the log…and when to be in the water.

PS We have a couple yoga mats open for tonight's class at 6.
