Can stored emotions make you hold weight?

Not because emotions are calories.
And not because your body is broken.

But because unresolved stress changes the way the nervous system, hormones, and metabolism function over time.

When the body experiences chronic stress, emotional overwhelm, or unresolved threat, it adapts.

👉Cortisol patterns shift.
👉 Blood sugar regulation changes.
👉 Inflammatory cycles stay activated.
👉 Muscle tone, digestion, sleep, and hunger signaling all adjust.

These are not failures.
They are intelligent protective responses.

The nervous system’s primary job is not fat loss.
It is survival.

So if stress responses like fight, flight, or freeze never fully resolve, the body may hold weight, water, or inflammation as part of staying safe.

Body fat is not just extra weight,
it’s an active endocrine organ that influences hormones, metabolism, and energy.

This is exactly what I’m talking about in the podcast clip you’re listening to. Head over to for the full episode.

In the U.S., we are statistically overconsuming calories, even when those calories come from “clean,” high-quality, organic, nutrient-dense food.

Those excess calories doesn’t disappear; they get stored.
And your body can create an endless amount of storage in the form of body fat.

Here’s the part that often gets overlooked:

2016 was a year of transition in every sense.

We packed up our entire house, moved across the country to North Carolina with a 4-year-old, and I spent the first stretch nauseous, exhausted, and pregnant with my second son.

Somewhere along the way, I experienced a couple injuries while pregnant doing CARDIO, and part of why I shifted to strength training.

I also had the strangest emergency of not being able to urinate one day in my first trimester. I had to wear a catheter and urine bag for weeks.

After seeing Dr’s, urologist specialists - who all told me it had nothing to do with pregnancy - I found my new midwife in NC who reassured me that yes, it was absolutely from being pregnant, and we worked through it together 🫶 One of many times I have listened to my intuition.

The big change was moving from the bubble of Marin County, NorCal, to a small rural town outside Winston-Salem, and the contrast was jarring in the best way.

It took months for my nervous system to truly recalibrate.
I couldn’t get over everyone waving and strangers talking to you like they’d known you for years.

I didn’t realize how hyper-vigilant I’d been in CA, how much pressure there was to think + live the same.

In NC, my nervous system finally felt safe enough to relax.

And from that safety, strength followed.

That’s where I learned how to powerlift.
Fell in love with the barbell.
And found community in a tiny powerlifting gym that became family.

For the first time, I experienced what it felt like to build real strength, physically and emotionally, without performing or proving.

That year didn’t look “big” from the outside, but it cracked me open in all the right ways.

It was the landing pad.
The recalibration.
The quiet before everything changed.

Sometimes transformation doesn’t arrive as a lightning bolt.

Sometimes it starts when your nervous system finally feels safe enough to rest. 🌿

It was the “calmest” year (I know it doesn’t sound like it, but that was a chill year for me 😆) before massive upheaval.

Looking back, 2016 me had absolutely no idea of what she was capable of and the version of her to come 🫶

Musings of South Africa…

I quit drinking over two years ago.

The first 30 days were a detox I wasn’t prepared for.

Sadness.
Anger.
Rage.

All of it surfaced at once.

I was never taught what these emotions meant, or what they were for.
So I pushed them down.
I unconsciously numbed with alcohol.

For a long time, I carried a story that said no one could handle my emotions.
And in some ways, that was true, especially with the people who mattered most when I was younger.

But as I got older, that story stopped holding water.
Still, the pattern stayed on loop.

I now have a deep toolbox when it comes to self care.

I’ve been teaching body intelligence for over 20 years.
How to regulate blood sugar.
How to strength train.
How to correct long-standing postural imbalances.
How to support true, sustainable habit change.

I had a system.
And it worked… most of the time.

Until it came to my own emotions.

That’s when I realized something essential.
I had never been taught how to feel.

And then I began to see the interconnected nature of everything I had been teaching for the first two decades.

Without basic physiological safety, without stress management at the nervous system level, trying to quit drinking or smoking can feel impossible.
Like trying to cross miles on a treadmill.

Communities like AA can be incredibly supportive, but most models still don’t address blood sugar regulation or the full stress load the body is carrying.
And without that foundation, the system keeps reaching for relief.
