A car accident is something that no one expects. Right after the crash, you may feel numbness or pain due to the injuries and the shock on your body. Physical injuries such as bruises, fractures, and bleeding are obvious, but you may not be aware of other injuries such as pulled muscles, tissue damage, sprains, or even internal bleeding. That’s because many of these kinds of injuries aren’t apparent immediately following the incident.

Dr. Russell Amundson, National Senior Medical Director for UnitedHealthcare, joined 7News to discuss tips to prevent and treat low back pain amid the work-from-home trend.

Due to the pandemic, many people may be sitting more than usual, and people working remotely may have been working at office spaces in awkward places in their homes. Some people may have foregone the normal office set-up entirely, instead choosing a couch or bed, neither of which has an ergonomic design. Many people suffer from lower back pain in silence which if left unattended can lead to severe complications.

The pain, ranging from a dull ache to a stinging sensation, is often a result of injury to a muscle (strain) or ligament (sprain) and is due to prolonged sitting in a poor posture or lying down in a wrong position.

Often wished away by many people, the burning pain can easily spread down to the legs or worsen with bending, twisting, lifting, standing, or walking because of muscle spasms and tightness.

Two-thirds of spinal fractures suffered by American children and teens occur in car crashes when they aren't wearing seat belts, a new study finds.

Researchers analyzed data on more than 34,500 U.S. patients younger than 18 who suffered spinal fractures between 2009 and 2014. Teens aged 15 to 17 accounted for about 63% of the spinal fractures, two-thirds of which occurred in motor vehicle accidents.

As an interventional spine specialist, I’m commonly asked the same question by my patients: “How could I have prevented this back pain?”

Degenerative disc disease, facet (low back joints) arthritis, spinal stenosis and sciatic pain are conditions that come with an aging spine. It’s not a question of if you’re going to get one or more of these diseases but rather when. Our spines are going to wear out no matter what you do.

There are plenty of reasons why your neck is hurting. For starters, there are muscle strains, likely caused by your desk job. "Overuse, such as too many hours hunched over your computer or smartphone, often triggers muscle strains," write the experts at The Mayo Clinic. "Even minor things, such as reading in bed or gritting your teach, can strain your neck muscles."

Before the pandemic, we were all a little more mobile. Commuting to and from work, walking from desks to meetings or even just getting up to chat with a coworker, leisurely movement was more naturally incorporated into the workday. Now, with many Americans still working remotely or on a hybrid schedule, and with desks down the hall from bedrooms, that much-needed mobility is more difficult to come by.

From the couch to the dining room table, even the bed, for many people COVID-19 has changed where and how you work.

“What we’ve got is a situation where people might be spending a lot more time at home than usual. They might be having to work from home or stay home to look after children, and so they may be trying to do their work on a computer that’s set up differently, so that’s going to change the stresses and strains on the spine, particularly being in an awkward posture,” said Kath Kinross, a physical therapist with Lee Health.

When much of America pivoted to working from home in March 2020 as COVID-19 surged across the nation, spur-of-the-moment set-ups for laptops and office supplies spread around the house to kitchen tables, card tables, coffee tables and couches.

As work-from-home became the routine, some people invested in actual office equipment and carved out a space for themselves in the house. Others remained hunched over the laptop on the sectional morning, noon and night.
