Is it clarity? Is it chaos? Is the whole world falling apart? Who knows.

But I read tarot and let's find out together.

This week's Touch of Chaos: Ten Bottles

It is really lovely to have a dream of the future, something to work toward. There should be no limits on our capacity to dream. However. Dreams can only come true in the future if we put in the work in the present. We can imagine whatever future we like, we can fantasize about all the wonderful, beautiful things we're going to do and build, but it won't make a lick of difference if we're not also putting in the real, practical work to build and do those things. Until then, it's just fantasy and speculation. This week, consider what it is you can DO rather than what it is you can dream.

One of my favorite ways to get to know a new tarot deck: Interview it!

1. General energy of the Deck
2. Strengths as a Deck
3. Limitations as a Deck
4. What are you here to teach me?
5. What is the best way to work with you?
6. Outcome of our relationship

This week's Touch of Chaos: All Hung Up

We're a little stuck right now, and it's uncomfortable. We might feel a little powerless to do anything about what we're witnessing. For many of us, this is a nightmare situation. Watching events unfold before us while feeling utterly powerless to stop it. And while Houdini might have been able to get out of this jam, not many of us are equipped with that skill set. It would be easy to give in to the ennui and focus on what we can't do. What our limitations are. What is holding us back or tying us up or in all other ways preventing us from acting. But there is one thing our friend in the picture can do: Witness. We can watch what is happening. And we can remember. And we can plan. We might not be able to do anything right this moment, but we won't be tied up forever.

When I was 9 years old (I think?) I saved my allowance for a whole year to buy my Molly doll. I had a shoebox with a hole cut in the top and the words "Molly Doll Money" scrawled on the side. When I finally had enough and ordered her from the American Girl catalog, I was so excited. And then ... I never really played with her. I knew how much she cost (shipping AND handling), and I didn't want to mess her up or get her dirty or break her. So she sat on my shelf for years. Yesterday, I walked into the American Girl store (not for the first time but close enough). It was the first time in my life I realized I could change her clothes. She didn't have to stay in her "Molly" attire. She could dress for softball, or horseback riding, or roller skating. She could have a dog or a canoe, or even just a different pair of glasses. It sounds silly, but it was a revelation. So today, for the first time in maybe 30 years, I changed her clothes. And I unbraided her hair. And I held her.

30 years ago, I learned the value of money and saving up for something I wanted. I learned how many hour-dollars it took to get a Molly doll. Today, I'm learning the value of play and creative expression. And what it meant to that little girl who was too afraid to change her doll's clothes.

This week's Touch of Chaos: Bottle Man

One of the tricky things about being the emotionally mature person in the room is trying to understand where everyone else is coming from. Giving grace and allowing for f**k ups. Another tricky thing about it is a kind of unspoken self-righteousness. Placing oneself above the emotional fray, so to speak. The thing is, we're all in this together. And while we may want to be understanding, or allow room, or see things from the perspective of others, there are still such things as boundaries and lines and right and wrong. You don't have to allow space to those who are hurting you. You don't have to see from someone else's perspective to justify sh*tty behavior. And trying to create emotional distance (while sometimes necessary) also divorces you from your humanity. Don't be afraid of the emotional fray. Don't cut off your feelings completely. Empathy is still one of the greatest human strengths there is and I will be taking no questions on that.

Touch of Chaos for July: Ace Bottles, reversed, and Mom

The overall energy I'm getting from these cards is that we may want to go to a corner and have our feelings and let Mom take care of everything. The idea or feeling that someone, a parent or a boss or someone "in charge," will come in and rescue us or fix what's wrong or kiss it and make it all better. And unfortunately... no one is coming to rescue us. We can't pass on our responsibilities, or our feelings, or our needs, or anything else. We are in this. We have to face it. Mom can't fix it. It's time to stand on our own feet and face what is happening. Now, can we face it with a bit of pie and while sobbing our eyes out? Absolutely. But we can't run or hide or expect anyone else to come in and save us. So get you some pie, get you some tissues, and let's go.

Chaos in Review for June

Almost all of our cards were reversed this month. Normally I would read this as it being a good time to do a little introspection and reflection, but honestly this feels more like spinning wheels. Perhaps a fair amount of stops and starts. A desire to act but having not the energy to do so.

Our overall monthly cards were both Bills, suggesting a focus on money, values, material things, but our weekly cards were a split of Bottles, TVs, and Guns, with one Major Arcana bringing up the rear. Even if the overall focus of the month was on money, our weekly focus was not. It feels like a lot of recalibrating of other things in order to fit into the narrative, like we're trying to find a space for say our emotions, or our passions, in a world that values materials. That feels like it may have been a big theme for this month.

I want to take a moment to talk about our two upright cards: Three Bills and Seven Guns, the cards of collaboration and keeping up the fight, respectively. These are our points of action this month. The message in them together says: we are stronger together. We are better together. We are able to fight that good fight when we work together. It might be exhausting, but it is less exhausting when we know we can tap out for a minute. We are all in this together.
