When “Home” is a Feeling, Not a Place ❤️
“I want to go home.”
It’s one of the most common, and toughest phrases we hear as dementia caregivers. Even when someone is sitting in their own home.
Our instinct is often to use logic:
“You’ve lived here for years.”
“Your bedroom is right down the hall.”
But dementia changes how the present is experienced. When someone asks for “home,” they are often asking for safety, comfort, and familiarity.
The Shift: Validation over Logic
“You’re missing home? Tell me what you loved most about it.”
“I can see you’re feeling unsettled. I’m right here with you.”
When we validate the feeling, we reduce distress.
