❄️☃️ THE FREEZE RESPONSE ☃️❄️

"I was just like a deer in headlights" / "I froze, like no words came to my mouth and my brain just wouldn't work" / "I can't help just lying on the couch all day...time just flies by and I don't really care anymore"

Nerd-out moment: When the nervous system perceives a threat as insurmountable or overwhelming, it initiates the freeze response. This involves a parasympathetic shift characterized by a withdrawal from engagement with the environment, accompanied by physical stillness or minimal movement. This reaction is evolutionarily conserved, reflecting an adaptive strategy in the face of danger. The freeze response is theorized to have evolved as a last resort when fight or flight responses are deemed ineffective or too risky. Understanding the freeze response through the lens of Polyvagal theory provides valuable insights into the neurophysiological basis of stress and trauma responses, informing therapeutic approaches that focus on promoting feelings of safety and connection to regulate the autonomic nervous system and mitigate the impacts of trauma.

In other words: the Freeze response is a helpful function of our survival that causes our body to prepare for an overwhelming experience. Freeze shows up in many ways, looking like depression or laziness. One way we can know for sure that it's a freeze response rather than plain "laziness" is by asking this question: "What are you avoiding?". Now, if your answer has to do with a perceived threat--even if it's not "logical"--then we can be pretty sure that it's freeze.

Freeze responses indicate that we feel unsafe and overwhelmed. While I have some somatic activities listed to help move that energy in your body, another thing you can do is talk with a therapist about what you're afraid of. Working through it with a trained trauma therapist could make a huge difference in how you experience the world.

I really have loved to watch the world of mental health grow and change through innovative ideas. One of my favorite things to watch is the development of cultural awareness and sensitivity. As we all pursue our own sense of mental wellness, know that the field of psychology is ever-changing and developing. Even the words we use for diagnoses change! (If you ever have an extra minute, look up how much certain diagnoses they have).

Now, one thing we've been able to see that has helped across the board is learning to adapt to a larger window of tolerance and to develop a sense of authentic gratefulness. Perhaps, we can all start with something small: each day, find something seemingly insignificant that you're thankful for. Maybe this could be something as small as the birdsong in the morning, or the surprise of flowers confettied across the street, or even the smell of coffee as you enter your office. I wonder what kind of a difference those small ripples could make across a lifetime.
