The summer months can bring unique challenges for those with terminal illnesses, but with the right precautions, you can keep your loved one safe and comfortable.
Here’s what to keep in mind:
💧 Keep them Hydrated: Dehydration can happen quickly, especially for those who may not feel thirsty or are taking certain medications. Encourage small sips of water throughout the day and offer hydrating snacks like popsicles, watermelon, and cucumber slices.
🧴 Sun Protection Is a Must: Sensitive skin can be more susceptible to burns. Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30+), and reapply every two hours or after sweating. Use a wide-brimmed hat and light, breathable clothing to prevent overheating.
😴 Monitor for Fatigue: Heat can worsen fatigue, especially for those with limited mobility or chronic illness. Keep living spaces cool with fans or air conditioning, and encourage frequent breaks in a shaded or air-conditioned area.
🛋️ Rest & Rejuvenate: Heat can exacerbate symptoms like nausea or shortness of breath. Plan activities during cooler parts of the day and ensure they have a comfortable space to rest.
🧠 Check for Medication Side Effects: Some medications can increase sensitivity to sunlight or cause dehydration. Review medications with a healthcare provider to adjust routines as needed.
Caring for a terminally ill loved one during the summer takes extra vigilance, but simple steps can make all the difference in their comfort and well-being.
Keep these in mind as you navigate the summer months.
