Join us at The Horn coffee shop this Saturday, December 16th, at 2 PM for “Waters Under Baghdad” book signing! Don’t miss your chance to get a signed copy on-site. All proceeds from the event will go to .

About the book 📚
“Faisal, a young Iraqi man from Baghdad, loses his family and home and flees his country in the aftermath of war. While stranded at the Belarus-Poland border during the infamous refugee crisis of 2019 along with thousands of other migrants, he meets Gulistan, an Iraqi woman who reminds him of his mother and who lost family members of her own. So begins a multigenerational epic stretching back a hundred years in Iraq’s modern history, all viewed through the eyes of a single family- from the birth of a new Iraq amid the ashes of the Ottoman Empire to the collapse following the American invasion and the overthrow of Saddam Hussein. While Faisal vows to help Gulistan find her lost family members in a strange and unwelcoming land, he reflects on his own family’s history going back three generations. Faisal’s complicated romance with the passionate Mutanabbi street bookseller, Amani, is a microcosm of the evolving Iraqi society, with their entangled lives charting a course parallel to the nation’s history. Together, they bear witness to their homeland’s upheavals, embodying the resilience that has come to define the people of Iraq. Brifkani’s eagerly anticipated second novel after his debut The Mountains We Carry, Waters Under Baghdad is an intimate account of a family through both good times and bad, from the hopeful reign of King Faisal I, through revolutions, coups and ultimately civil war, a story that feels equally urgent and timeless.”

Salam Alaikum,

Welcome to week 4 of my nutrition series for A Continuous Charity. This week we're talking about ending Ramadan strong and maintaining our health and nutrition post-Ramadan.

5️⃣ Tips To Maintain Your Nutrition & Health Post Ramadan

1️⃣. Plan well. Bring the right ingredients home. This is the first step toward healthy cooking. Stock up your pantry, refrigerator, and freezer with ingredients to help you cook healthy meals. Having a shopping list will help you optimize your time in the grocery store and reduce impulse buying and returning to the store later for items you forgot to purchase. When meal planning, visualize all components of a balanced meal (protein + grain/carb + veggies, fruit).

2️⃣. Work on wholesome and balanced meals and eat slowly. We talk about this a lot because it is so important! Refrain from following any fad diets that exclude food groups. Aim to divide your plate this way: ½ of your plate should consist of fruits/vegetables (vary the color to get a variety of phytonutrients), ¼ should be protein (lean meat/poultry/fish; and/or plant-based protein), ¼ should be grains/carbs (aim for nutrient-dense/high fiber carbs/grains, fiber enhances satiety). Tip - you can leave off fruit and have it during snacks; this will leave more room for more veggies. For snacks, do a combo of 1 carb/grain + 1 protein (1 🍎 and a handful of almonds, greek yogurt with granola, hummus with pita chips/veggies/crackers).

3️⃣. Cooking methods - Concentrate on cooking techniques that preserve nutrients. If you're regularly frying, switch to better cooking methods (baking, braising, roasting, sautéing, grilling, searing, stir-frying, and air frying).

4️⃣. Water should be your primary source of hydration. Infuse with fresh/frozen fruits, veggies, and herbs to improve taste (berries, mint, basil, ginger).

5️⃣. Physical activity - aim to be active every day! Plan for it and make it part of your daily routine. Do something you love, so it does not feel like a chore (indoor, outdoor, gym, exercise equipment, exercise video, etc.)!
