🚴‍♀️Race recap: Nashville Women’s Triathlon

💪🏻 Weather was perfect for the Nashville Women’s Tri this year. The race was held on Mother’s Day, which some people did not like, but I thought it was a great way to spend my Mother’s Day morning.

💥 I felt good for all three disciplines. This was a sprint tri. Race distances were 200m swim, 16K bike, 4K run. We swam at the Centennial Sportsplex pool then biked through Sylvan Park. The run was in Centennial Park.

🌱 We had a lot of women out there doing their first ever triathlon! Nice work ladies!

🎉 I was 5th overall finisher and 2nd in my age group. The best part of the day was seeing my cheer squad, as always.

💥 Typically I recommend that people wait until 12 weeks postpartum to begin a running program. However, before that 12-week mark, you can start doing things to get your body ready to run!

🏃‍♀️ Here are 3️⃣ simple strengthening exercises that you can do to prep for running in the postpartum period.

1️⃣ Single leg heel raises: your calves work really REALLY hard when you run. Let’s get them ready to do it.

2️⃣ Banded clams: time to work those hips, baby! Your core will turn on with this one too.

3️⃣ Bridges: your glutes and hamstrings will thank you for this one. Lifting your forefoot will engage more of your glute max. Also, this one is great to combat the PP “mom butt.”

🤌There you have it! Three easy things you can start doing early in the PP period to prep for a smooth return to running.

🏃‍♀️ Tips for running with a stroller 🏃‍♀️

1️⃣ Make sure your baby is buckled in properly. The straps should not be twisted and should be snug but not too tight.

2️⃣ Lock your front wheel. This is for safety! You are at a higher risk of the stroller tipping over if you run with the front wheel unlocked.

3️⃣ Pump your tires. Check the recommended psi. It will be on the tire itself. Pump those suckers up to have a smoother, more enjoyable stroller run.

4️⃣ Baby needs to have good head control. Always consult with your pediatrician before starting to run with your baby in a jogging stroller. You want your child to have good head control prior to stroller running with them. Most providers recommend waiting until baby is about 6 months old, but like I said, check with your kiddo’s pediatrician!

5️⃣ Push with one hand on flats. When the road is flat, try pushing with one hand. This will allow your trunk to rotate more naturally, as it does when you run and are not pushing a stroller.

6️⃣ Push with two hands up hills. Two hands on the stroller, lean forward, and go! Don’t forget to breathe!

7️⃣ Pop a wheelie to turn. Since your front wheel is locked, you have to push down slightly on the handlebar and pop a small wheelie to turn your stroller.

💥 Next time you are running with a stroller, try out some of these things! And most importantly, have fun!

🚽 Some foods and drinks can irritate the lining of the bladder which may worsen urinary frequency, urgency, or leakage.

🍅 Acidic foods, tomato-based products, citrus, chocolate, spicy foods, coffee, tea, alcohol, dairy, and carbonated drinks are all items that may cause bladder irritation.

🍫 Cutting down or eliminating some of these foods from your diet may help you to identify your specific bladder irritants and can lead to an improvement in your urinary symptoms.

🌶️ If you identify a bladder irritant, it doesn’t mean that you can never enjoy that food or beverage again. It may just be a helpful tool in understanding how to manage your bladder symptoms.

👩‍💻If you have urinary incontinence, overactive bladder or painful bladder syndrome, pelvic floor PT can help!

🏃‍♀️ Race Recap - Riverbluff Sprint Tri on Aug 11

💥 This past weekend, I did the Riverbluff Sprint Triathlon in Ashland City. 400m swim, 12.1 mile bike, 5K run. We had perfect weather on race day! Sunshine, mild temps and low humidity.

🌟 This was my first time doing this race, and I loved it! It’s a river swim, nice flat bike course and a run with some small hills and some shaded portions. I went out that morning to have fun and was surprised to place 2nd in my age group. Icing on the cake! I will definitely be doing this race again.

🚴 As always, did a great job putting on this race, keeping athletes safe and making sure the race course was well-marked. Sending a big thank you to

🏊‍♂️ The best part of the day was seeing so many friends! I had team mates from BEAT racing, saw some friends from the PT world, and other friends from East Nashville Tri Club, Nashville Tri Club, and Working Triathlete. It’s always fun to hang out with athletes from other tri clubs in the area on race day.

💫 Shout out to all the volunteers at the race, but especially to and for cheering me on! Fun fact, Chase and I met through the LSU Triathlon Club. Now we are both PTs in Nashville. We have come full circle!

💪🏻 Post-race, I was chatting with some amazing women in my age group. They are so strong, so kind, and inspire me to keep working hard. In the triathlon community, we really do lift each other up.

Music City Sprint Triathlon 6/2/24

About four weeks ago, I had an injury. My back and my L hip were really hurting after my half marathon on April 27. I had to miss a race on May 19, and I was bummed about it.

I went to see my friend Lauren Johnson and she helped to diagnose and treat my issues. I rested, I did my rehab exercises, and I trusted the process. And guess what? It worked!

I went into my race on Sunday telling myself to just have fun and do the best I could. Somehow I won my age group. 😱 🎉 💃

I’m sending a big thank you to for guiding me through my injury. Thank you to my tri club for always providing encouragement and great friends to train with. Thank you to Daniel Daunis for always supporting me and for wrangling the boys to come cheer me on at the race.

Thank you to for driving me to/from the race and playing my requested Taylor Swift jams at 5:30am. And thank you to for putting on a great race and keeping us all safe.

💪🏻 I almost always tell my patients to record their workouts. You can do this on your phone, with an app, or with plain old pen and paper.

🏃‍♀️ This is my half marathon training plan. You can see that I’ve scribbled all over it. There are a lot of sick days on there. And a lot of days that say “kids” which meant I was hanging with the kiddos and didn’t get a formal workout in.

👀 I’m going to race tomorrow. Looking back at my training plan and my workouts helps to give me a good idea of what my race will look like. It helps me set realistic expectations for myself. And I can be proud of all the workouts that I got in! 🎉 💃

⭐️ I don’t think I’ll PR at this race, but I feel good today, so I’m going to go out there and have some fun on the course tomorrow.

⁉️ Who else is doing a race tomorrow?! Drop a comment below!

This past weekend I got to hang out with , and some amazing clinicians in Nashville for the Bones, Tendons, Weights and Whistles course. I learned so much about how to better manage runners with tendon issues and bone stress injuries. I also learned some new clinical field tests, new interventions and tips on how to better communicate with my patients. Best of all, I made some new friends in the running and rehab community! This is a reminder to always keep learning and pushing yourself. And to choose PT first!

Manual therapy. It simply means when a therapist uses their hands to manipulate tissue. Research shows that manual therapy in conjunction with targeted exercises is a highly effective way to treat back pain. Do you have chronic pain or an orthopedic issue?
