Whether you like Tyler Perry or not, STRAW is a cautionary tale of what happens when people are pushed past the breaking point in systems that were never built to support them.
As someone who works at the intersection of healthcare quality, equity, and organizational culture, I saw STRAW as more than a tragic movie; it’s a health justice case study, and illustration of how social drivers of health manifest in real life.

Three hard truths STRAW puts in focus:

1. Toxic workplaces are a public health issue. From microaggressions to burnout, the stress of being “the only one” or “the strong one” chips away at our health. It doesn’t just harm individuals, it ripples out to families and communities.

2. Weathering is not just theory. Years of accumulated stress, racism, and overperformance age Black bodies prematurely, increase health risks during pregnancy, impair executive function, and erode well-being long before disease appears.

3. We don’t need more resilience—we need justice. Black women are tired of being expected to strive, survive, and stay strong. We need systems that care, not just stories that make us visible.
