Betty Jean Cook

Betty Jean Cook, a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, peacefully departed this world at her home in Nashville, Tn. on May 4, 2026, at the age of 90. Born on March 18, 1936, in the rolling hills of Jackson County, TN, Betty was the cherished daughter of John McCue and Essie Lee Cox. Her journey through life was marked by a profound love for family, an unyielding sense of community, and an unwavering spirit of kindness.

Betty was the youngest of nine siblings and was predeceased by her beloved brothers and sisters: Georgia Emma Cox, Collins Cox, Bruce Cox, Ruby Cox, Frank Cox, Alexander (Ed) Cox, Tennie Cox, and John Cox. Her parents, John McCue and Essie Lee Cox, also predeceased her, along with her devoted husband, Draper C. Cook, with whom she shared 56 beautiful years of marriage, and her cherished son, Timothy Quinn Cook.

A graduate of Jackson County High School in 1955, Betty embarked on a diverse professional journey. She began her career as a beautician, a role that beautifully mirrored her natural ability to bring warmth and beauty into the lives of others. Her career path later led her to Tennessee Metal Culver Company, where she honed her skills in accounting and bookkeeping. Betty continued her work at Madison Mills Inc., where she managed payroll and connected with many individuals, further expanding her circle of friends.

Betty's life was enriched by her many passions. She had a remarkable talent for transforming old furniture into beautiful treasures, a skill she shared with Draper. Together, they frequented yard sales and auctions, collecting Fiesta dinnerware and building a life filled with shared memories and love. Her garden was her sanctuary, a place where she cultivated not only flowers but also the deep love, she held for her family and community.

Betty's heart was as expansive as her interests. Known for her kind and loving nature, she had an incredible gift for making everyone feel welcome. Her generosity and readiness to help others were the hallmarks of her character, leaving an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her laughter, wisdom, and unwavering support will be remembered and cherished by her surviving daughter, Vickie Renee Cook, her life partner, Betty (Bett) Jo Shoun, and her granddaughter, Keira Harlee Cook. Her legacy also lives on through her many cousins and the close friends who became family.

Betty's life will be celebrated with a service on May 9, 2026, at 11:00 am, at West Harpeth Funeral Home and Crematory, located at 6962 Charlotte Pike. Her family invites all who knew her to join them in honoring her remarkable life and the love she shared so freely. Eugene Sherman Waycaster

Eugene Sherman Waycaster, known to most people as Gene or Ray, was born on Roan Mountain in East Tennessee on August 27, 1941. He passed on April 10, 2026 at his home in Ashland City, TN with his wife Donna and his dog, Daisy by his side. They had made a life together there for 30 plus years.

This east TN mountain boy joined the Air Force and went to Bunker Hill Air Force Base in IN, while there he met his first wife and had 3 children. Then the family moved to middle TN and had another child. He joined the TN National Guard and that career ultimately lead to his 40 plus year career as a Surgical First Assistant. He met Donna working at the hospital and they were in the same unit in the National Guard.

He worked at Saint Thomas West and Saint Thomas Ambulatory Surgery Center for over 40 years.

He proudly told stories of working with Dr. Allen Anderson when he was a resident and helping to pioneer new surgical techniques.

Anyone who knew Gene, knew he lived to go to the woods! It didn't matter the weather or even if there was an hunting season open, he just wanted to go to the woods.

He loved spending time on “the property”, literally thousands of hours, just walking thru the woods, or riding on the tractor, or riding in the truck, or checking the fields, or, sitingt in a tree stand and reading a book. When he couldn't get to the woods, he would sit on his back deck, with the woods just behind him. He loved being outside.

Gene was very proud of his military career and proud that all 4 of his children followed him into the military. He was especially proud that 4 of his grand children also followed his footsteps and joined the military. He has stayed active in his Local VFW #1970, sometimes acting as the cook.

Gene is survived by his 4 children, Eugene L. Waycaster (Sharon), Lorraine R. Taylor (Terrance), Raymond H. Miller (Cathy) and William T. Miller (Lindsay). 14 grand children, Jessicia, Amber, Brittany (deceased), Leslie, Zachary, DJ, Shon, Curtis, Taryn, Megan, Kalyna, Leah, Will and John Ross and 17 great grand children. Also, survived by his South Carolina family, Mary & Greg and God children Brittany, Rachel, and Laura Beth. And his brother-in-law, Tom Hamlett.

The family will receive relatives and friends on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, from four o'clock in the afternoon until eight o'clock in the evening at West Harpeth Funeral Home and Crematory in the West Hall, 6962 Charlottle Pike in Nashville. The funeral service will be held on Thursday, April 16, 2026, at one o'clock in the afternoon with visiting an hour prior to the service in the Chapel at West Harpeth Funeral Home and Crematory. Pastor Randy Hester will be officiating.
