In frigid weather, beware of carbon monoxide poisoning. Room heaters, furnaces, charcoal grills, cooking ranges, water heaters, cars and portable generators can potentially give off this odorless invisible toxic gas. Symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning: headache, dizziness, sleepiness and/or nausea. Those affected should immediately get fresh air and medical attention.

Call the Tennessee Poison Center if you suspect someone has carbon monoxide poisoning: 1‑800‑222‑1222. But if anyone passes out, has confusion, seizures, difficulty breathing, stops breathing or has chest pain, call 911 immediately.

The emergency department at Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt has seen an increase in carbon monoxide poisonings with the recent freezing temperatures.

See the link in the comments for what to do if you suspect carbon monoxide exposure in your home; and where you can go for power and heat.

While bundling kids into warm winter coats, be aware that in the car, it’s important to buckle them into their car seats without the coats. For safety, place coats over them after buckling in. Thick winter coats get compressed in a collision, making it less likely the seat belt can restrain them as designed. See the link in the comments for detailed information.

Since babies are born with very low levels of Vitamin K, a vital nutrient that helps their blood clot properly, experts at Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt urge families to get single dose of Vitamin K at birth.

Without this preventive shot — which has been the standard of care for 65 years — newborns are at risk for vitamin K deficiency bleeding.

“Infant mortality rates have decreased dramatically because we are learning more and more about how to keep babies alive,” said Anna Morad, MD, associate professor of Pediatrics at Monroe Carell and director of Newborn Nursery at Vanderbilt Health. “Vitamin K is one of the things that keeps babies alive.”

Protect your baby during those first few vulnerable weeks of life. Read our article to learn more, and discuss any questions with your pediatrician.
