We had some snow, but the roads were good enough by Sunday to have our third event, and it was very satisfying for all of us. In our discussion, we read an article by Chris Hayes (MSNBC host) about attention in our culture, and the perception of boredom and our attempts to recoil from it. This led to a discussion about what Chogyam Trungpa called "hot boredom versus cool boredom." When we sit, we simply pay attention to what is happening (not much, but a whole lot of it...), and we can become restless, craving a dopamine hit (hot boredom), or rest in that neutral openness (cool boredom). There is no battle there, since we are not expecting anything.
Our minds can play games with our intentionality when we are spending our allotted time on the cushion. We can smile at it because we are onto that, and experience whatever comes up and learn about our minds.
Anyway, we will be meeting most Sunday mornings, and possibly some evenings, so let me know if you want to be invited through the FB post for the events. We will meet next on Sunday January 18 at 10 AM.

Dharma Lab had a great second session on January 5. I will continue to post our sessions on this Snow Lion site, since people continue to view it. (Snow Lion has reincarnated as Dharma Lab.)
Ignore the address on this page; we are meeting at my house in Inglewood, where I co-founded this community in 2004 before getting a public location. When we outgrow this space, we will look for a larger one.
We will meet mostly on Sunday mornings, and also some evenings to accommodate those who can’t make 10 AM Sundays. Due to winter weather uncertainties, I will post upcoming sessions here, after checking with participants.
Sunday Jan 12 is tentative at this point, but likely.
If you are interested, you can reply to this post.
Thanks, and stay warm.

The next session of Dharma Lab will be on Sunday, January 5; have a mindful and full-hearted holiday season, and bring that enlivened energy to the group.

The first meeting of Dharma Lab was a gratifying success. For those of you who wanted to attend but couldn’t make the Dec 8 date, we could hold another intro this Sunday, Dec 15 at 10 AM, or possibly 11 or Noon. Otherwise, the next one will be Sunday, Jan 5.
We are currently focusing on understanding the experience of meditation, to increase confidence, which then supports strategies for regularity of practice.

IT'S STARTING! As many of you know, I co-founded and helped lead a meditation group in Nashville for more than 16 years. We changed our affiliation just before the pandemic, and disbanded Snow Lion after that for financial reasons. I've been missing having a meditation community, and have decided to form another one. It will be called Dharma Lab, reflecting Buddhist sources of wisdom and the validation that modern neuroscience has recently added.
Our approach is not dogmatic or ritualistic, and we will draw from contemporary writers informed by Zen and Tibetan traditions, and from "the wisdom in the room." Mostly, we will sit together, and share our questions and insights.
Our initial session with be Sunday, December 8, from 10 AM to Noon, at my house. We have plenty of cushions, chairs, and sofas to suit your preferred style. No experience is necessary, and guided meditation instruction will be provided. If you don't know my address in Inglewood, message me.
We will have a pot-luck hang afterward, for those who wish to continue the conversation.

Friends, have heard from some former members of Snow Lion indicating a need for more community right now, and am speeding up the initiation of our new iteration, tentatively called Dharma Lab, to Sunday, December 8. I will also do a public post to this effect on my personal page. If you are interested in attending, please message me on either page.
This group is open to all who can feasibly attend a location in East Nashville, and no particular experience is required, nor is there any money involved.
Your comments and queries below are encouraged. Thank you.

With what is unfolding now, a community centered on development of heart and mind is even more important. It doesn’t have to be big, just physically real, people getting together for meditation together, and sharing insights.
If you think you might want to be a part of such a group in Nashville, comment below.

Getting closer to starting a new group. It might be called Dharma Lab.

Missing the meditation group more and more; thinking of offering an informal resurrection of it for others looking for an intimate meditation community, to practice together, and share insights in discussions. Comment or message me here or on my personal account if you are leaning this way also in 2024.
