Vanderbilt's Department of Emergency Medicine is a leader in clinical care, education, and research. Our combined emergency departments see over 103,000 patients annually. We are the only adult and pediatric Level 1 trauma center in middle Tennessee. Our Chairman, Dr. Hess, and Residency Director, Dr. Pirotte, make education their number one priority. Every faculty member and upper level resident

views excellent teaching as part of his or her responsibilities. All of us at Vanderbilt believe in creating a positive learning environment both in the classroom and at the bedside. Our fourth year medical student rotation is the highest rated required clinical rotation in the medical school. Numerous faculty are research leaders in the field of emergency medicine, several of whom are conducting NIH-sponsored research. Our department had over 50 peer-reviewed publications within the last calendar year. Details of our residency are provided in the residency section of our site. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us and we will be happy to assist.

That’s a wrap to the didactics/skills-practice portion of intern orientation! Over the last 2 weeks, the interns participated in cadaver labs to practice emergent procedures, a lot of emergency simulations, high yield didactics (always with yummy food, thanks to our amazing coordinators!), airway day with airway expert , and plenty of social events to foster the close knit community that we are proud to have at Vandy EM 🫶🏼 We will see you in the department starting tomorrow for the last 2 weeks of intern orientation!

This week for Match Monday we’re introducing Robert Kelly! Robert went to school at Mayo Clinic SOM in Arizona. He says that he’s most looking forward to “being with awesome people in a really cool city, what’s not to love?”

Fun fact: “Animals outnumber people in my house two to one; it feels more like a zoo than a home some days.”

Welcome to the team, Robert!! 🤩

For our final third year Thursday we have Ti James!! We are so lucky that she will be staying on as faculty here at Vanderbilt! Some of Ti’s favorites memories include dinners at Dr. Ray’s home and every retreat with my amazing residency family.

For advice for future residents Ti says, ” Please use every moment you have with your attendings, consultants, nurses, pharmacist, patients and your co-residents to learn as much as you can. Each of you will be amazing physicians and do not let your imposter syndrome tell you otherwise. ❤️“

It’s Match Monday, and this week we’re introducing Alexia Mendivil! She’s joining us from Georgetown University School of Medicine. She’s most looking forward to working alongside an amazing group of residents and faculty, while enjoying all that Nashville has to offer including line dancing!

Fun fact: “I have gone diving in 9 different countries, across 4 continents.”

So excited that you’re joining the team, Alexia!!

This week for third year Thursday we have Laura Shepherd! Next year Laura will be working in the ED/with residents at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth and serving as a medical officer for the United States Marine Corps 2nd Medical Battalion at Camp Lejeune! Her favorite residency memories include working with Vanderbilt LifeFlight Event Medicine at PBR (Professional Bull Riding) at Bridgestone Arena!

For advice for future residents she says, “ you will learn so much if you follow your patients’ charts after they leave the ED; take every opportunity to do procedures you’re uncomfortable with or see chief complaints that make you nervous while you are still protected in training; work hard to master the basics early in training to you can learn the nuisances to clinical management in your second and third years.”

We’ll miss you Laura! Portsmouth is lucky to have you!

This week for third year Thursday we have Frankie Parisi! Next year Frankie will be an attending at George Washington University in Washington DC. His favorite residency memories include his co-residents joining him on a 50 mile ultra!

For advice for future residents Frankie says “Always prep your airway setup before every trauma. If you don’t have time for a full workout, 10 min is always better than 0 minutes. Never say no to post shift beers.”

We’ll miss you Frankie!
