Empower = the collaboration station! đŸ˜œđŸ«¶ That’s why we are a group practice after all!

COMMUNITY ASK: do you know a facility that would benefit from music therapy? Think mental health recovery centers, non-profits, inclusive schools, pediactric therapy centers! If so, send us a DM and we’ll put you in touch with Maria, our director of community engagement for a meet up sometime this fall! 📧

At Empower, the proof is in the pudding: we do more good when we do good TOGETHER. So, let’s collaborate!!

Sending gratitude to our current incredible partners- we love bringing music therapy to your world!!

There is no “right” way to be human!! We’ll say it again and again. Every brain is unique. Every way of thinking, feeling, learning, and connecting is valid. The spectrum of normal is wide enough to include us ALL!!

At Empower, being neurodiversity-affirming means creating space where clients can show up fully, authentically, and as themselves. We honor differences, support self-advocacy, and use music to celebrate strengths—not to “fix” anyone, but to nurture belonging. We also acknowledge the burdens of our ableist culture, and work to create a space where those weights don’t have the final say.

Because there’s no one “right” way to be human—and that truth is worth amplifying.

One thing research shows us again and again? The way we talk to ourselves really matters.

That’s why we love encouraging our pediatric clients to practice affirmations—simple, powerful statements that nurture confidence, self-regulation, and joy.

Here are a few inspired by music and music therapy principles! Try them out with your kids today—and if you want to add a little extra fun, pair them with body percussion (think clapping, snapping, or tapping to the rhythm).

Because music + words = a recipe for growth, belonging, and strength!!

CAREER MILESTONE 🎉 Our very own Maria Malafronte, MT-BC, NICU-MT, has officially been promoted into the role of Director of Community Engagement—and if you know Maria, you know this is exactly where she belongs.

Maria leads with connection. She has a rare gift for cultivating relationships that are real, lasting, and rooted in meaning. From clients and families to partners and colleagues, she creates spaces where people feel seen, valued, and part of something bigger than themselves.

She’s also the kind of teammate who will have you laughing until your sides hurt, then turn around and remind you—through her grit and creativity—why this work matters. Humor, heart, and hustle: Maria brings all three, every single day.

To try and capture all that Maria means to Empower in one caption would be impossible. So we’ll just say this:

We are deeply proud—and deeply grateful—to have her in this role. Maria leads with passion, boldness, s***k, and joy. And we’re so lucky she’s ours. Maria, thanks for making Empower the work home that it is. We couldn’t do it without you.

We get this question so often — and it’s such a valid one, because many people are still learning about music therapy for the first time! 💡

Here are just a few common examples of what music therapy might look like at our clinic. That said, music therapy is NOT one-size-fits-all — it’s completely adaptable depending on your support needs, musical preferences, and how you’re showing up that day.

We hope this helps paint a picture of what a session could look like for you or your loved one.

Something that really excites us at Empower? How young our field is in the grand scheme of things!

Don’t get us wrong—music has been used for healing since the very beginning. Across cultures, communities, and generations, it’s always been there to help us feel, connect, and belong.

But the profession of music therapy wasn’t officially established in the U.S. until 1950.

That means we’re still writing the story—and we get to help chart the course toward more access, more research, more inclusion, and more belonging.

Swipe through for a (brief) history lesson and imagine what’s possible with us. 💭✹

Did you know music therapy is still considered a young profession? That means every time we share what it actually is—we’re advocating. đŸ’ȘđŸœ

We’re building awareness.
We’re shifting the narrative.
We’re making sure the right people find the support they deserve.

So share this with a friend, teacher, doctor, or parent who might not know what music therapy is!
Remember: Advocacy starts with understanding.📓

At Empower, we offer inclusive, neurodiversity-affirming care that centers each client’s voice, identity, and goals.

It’s easy to forget how powerful music can be as a tool for reconnection, especially when we often listen passively. But what if you tried listening actively with someone you’re hoping to connect with more deeply—perhaps your child?

This activity combines a common family therapy technique called “special time” with a music therapy intervention known as “song discussion.”

We hope it helps! ❀ You can even adapt it to add movement, art making or fidgets— whatever keeps engagement flowing!
