VA Golden Age Games began in 1985, long before “senior athletics” was a mainstream idea. VA recognized that aging Veterans needed more than medical care. They also needed motivation, goals, and a sense of connection. So, the Games were born with just a few hundred competitors.
Today, they’ve grown into a major event where thousands of athletes and supporters from across the country come to take part. It is a living tribute to the fact that service continues after age 50 and that strength can last a lifetime.

The Veterans Health Administration is marking 80 years of supporting Veterans of all ages and abilities just like the Golden Age Game athletes. Learn more.

During National Volunteer Week, VA Tennessee Valley Healthcare System (TVHS) recognizes the individuals who continue to serve.

More than 157,000 Veterans receive care at TVHS each year, and many are welcomed not only by clinical staff, but by familiar and comforting presence: volunteers. These volunteers play a vital role in creating a positive experience for Veterans, offering assistance, guidance, and a friendly face throughout the medical centers and clinics.

The impact of volunteers at TVHS is both measurable and meaningful. In fiscal year 2025, 1,613 volunteers dedicated 32,864 hours of service.

As National Volunteer Week highlights the power of service, TVHS continues to welcome those who want to make a difference in the lives of Veterans.

“Driving all the way to Nashville for four hours can really get strenuous,” said Joel Edwards, a U.S. Army Infantry Veteran receiving oncology care at the Pointe Centre VA Clinic in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

According to the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), nearly one-quarter of Veterans live in rural areas, where specialty care often requires extended travel. For years, that was the reality for many Veterans living in southeast Tennessee and northern Georgia who experienced long drives for cancer treatment, often repeated week after week.

Now, that routine is changing.
