Looking for a book? I have a book share library in one of my patient exam rooms. It is nearly empty now as we have more takers than givers. If still looking, here are my recommendations.
I cannot rank them as they are all wonderful:
Undaunted Courage by Stephen Ambrose. The story of Meriweather and Lewis conspiring with Jefferson, then going from St Louis ( the edge of the known new world) striving for the West, aka Pacific Ocean. A woman is featured, Sakajawea, who makes all the difference at the halfway point.
Anything by David McCullough. I used to go to the nearby public library, and nonfiction is arranged by the author, so I would just pull the next off the shelf.
Of all of his books, and you might have read it, ladies might like The Greater Journey, telling about all the Americans, authors, artists, doctors, entertainers, that went to Paris 100 years ago, to further their knowledge and careers.
McCullough also wrote other books I personally enjoyed even more because they went deeper, were not vignettes:
Path between the Seas. The building of the Panama Canal 100 or so years ago. Started with French failure, then Americans conquering disease, before another shovel would be turned.
McCullough also wrote Truman, which told of a President who was after the best for America, a small town guy. So refreshing!
Also, The Great Bridge. The Brooklyn Bridge. May of your friends may visit New York. This would give some depth. Its opening was more significant than the first man on the moon, according to those that had seen both.
Finally, years ago, I looked for a mentor, and searched and read many books about those I might take lessons from. Do you know who was and still is my favorite?
Kit Carson, Blood and Thunder. Because all early westerns were called "Blood and Thunder" novels.
These are easy off the top of my head books. Hopefully there is something there you might enjoy.
