It was truly an honor to welcome Congressman Dale Strong of Alabama's District 5 to A Step Ahead Kids this week. His visit meant a great deal to our team and, most importantly, to the children, Veterans, and families we serve every day.
He took the time to listen and learn about the world of prosthetics and orthotics. Not just the science behind it, but the life-changing impact it has in helping children gain confidence, independence, and the ability to simply be kids.
We also shared the very real and often overwhelming challenges families face when it comes to insurance coverage for prosthetic devices. These barriers don’t just affect access to care, they shape daily life for children, families, and veterans alike.
Moments like this matter. Being heard matters. We are deeply grateful for the opportunity to share these stories, to shine a light on both the struggles and the strength of those we serve, and to continue advocating for better access to the care every child and family deserves.

We would like to take some time and congratulate one of our own CPOs, Ruth Guiness who was recently recognized as an Amputee Coalition Certified Lead Advocate! This distinguished position reflects the real-world advocacy, persistence and leadership Ruth has demonstrated in advancing

We asked Ruth what this new position means to her:

“I’m feeling incredibly greatful and honestly a little overwhelmed (in the best way) to be recognized as a Certified Lead Advocate with the Amputee Coalition. This work with So EveryBODY Can Move has meant so much to me. Not just the advocacy, but the people, the stories and the shared commitment to creating real change for the limb loss and limb difference community. It’s something I care deeply about and being part of this movement has been such an honor in itself. To be recognized in this way is truly humbling. So much of this work happens behind the scenes and I am grateful to play a small role alongside so many passionate and dedicated advocates across the country.

Thank you to everyone who continues to show up, speak out and push for better access and equity. We’re making a difference together!
My heart is full.”

Please help us in congratulating Ruth!! We are very proud of you!!

Look at her go: knees unlocked, pure grit and determination.
This spina bifida champ just walked in her KAFO braces—knees unlocked! No more rigid locks—just smooth, confident strides.
And it didn’t happen by accident. It took real teamwork: our orthotist fine-tuning the fit, her physical therapist guiding every move, both right here in our office. Usually we head to their space—but today? They came to us.
Why does that matter? Because collaboration isn’t optional—it’s the real magic. An orthotist builds the tool; a PT teaches how to use it. Together? We turn “maybe” into “watch this.” We catch tiny tweaks early, avoid setbacks, and unlock progress faster than either could alone.
At A Step Ahead, we’re not just fitting braces—we’re building partnerships that change lives. One step, one team, one win.
Who’s inspired? Teamwork wins.

Seven years strong. Two siblings. One orthotist who’s walked every mile with them.
(And yeah—Mr. Rocky’s a bilateral below-knee amputee himself, so he gets it. No lectures, just real understanding.)
He’s been leveling up these kids’ steps since they were tiny—now it’s dino roars on his AFOs and fresh hibiscus blooms on hers- Aloha!
We don’t just build braces. We build stories. And yeah, we make ’em colorful. 🌺🦖

Started fitting this kid when he was knee-high… now he’s six-five! But, if you’re gonna grow tall, might as well rock a leg that screams ‘Why so serious?’ louder than the Joker himself. Long-term patients? Please—this many years of working together - we’re family. 😈🦵
