Learn more about one of the most useful tests we use at Integrated Rehab. This test helps to tell us if the golfer can achieve the backswing pivot without compensation and without future risk of injury. Further, we can better understand if the golfer has the active range of motion available to create a powerful and repeatable downswing at the pelvis and hip.

TPI's (Titleist Performance Institute) lower quarter rotation test helps bridge the gap in testing between passive range of motion and the full golf swing.

This blog addresses common sport and weightlifting injuries. Topics include nutrition, supplementation, rehab exercise, and performance training.

Posture matters!

For golf performance AND the rehab process, addressing posture and positioning is crucial.

When was asked what the most common injury or site of pain was with golfers he is working with, he said the low back. And he helped explain why he thinks that is...

The posture and positioning your low back is in while generating force in the golf swing will either help limit the forces and load into your low back or exacerbate them. At Integrated Rehab and Performance Center, eliminating pain is always step 1, but working to improve mobility, movement patterns, and golf positioning and force generation comes next! Make sure you are not only addressing the pain (advil, ice, massage, chiropractic adjustments) but also the causes (mobility training, motor control integration, golf specific sequencing) in your treatment.

The respiratory lat stretch.

The goal here is not to create a big stretch in the lat, but more of a subtle stretch.

The position here helps allow us to create expansion at the ribs, thoracic spine, and the muscles around the shoulder complex.

Make sure to allow lumbar flexion and slight rotation of the spine as we sit and breath in this position. The breath is critical, breathing in through the nose and out through the mouth like fogging a mirror, helping to engage the respiratory and oblique muscles that pull the rib cage down and in. Maintaining this tension and position here, we encourage these structures to expand instead.

Mix this in to improve trunk and shoulder mobility!

This drill is a great starting place for lower extremity stability and motor control.

Here, we are locking in and recruiting the muscles around the hip and knee while actively creating planter-flexion of the ankle.

This is a great place to start for athletes and active adults with low back pain, hip pain, knee pain, and foot and ankle problems.

When working on foot, ankle, or knee pain in golfers, we can use drills like this to improve endurance at the stabilizer muscles of the hip, and lower extremity.

We can address the ability of the foot to pronate and supinate, for the tibia and knee to rotate, and for the hip and pelvis to rotate while in a weight bearing position.

This drill is fantastic for gofers and exercisers that have lived with chronic low back pain.

We can begin working this drill in more one we have limited pain and symptoms in the low back, now working to improve the mobility and functional capacity of the lumbar spine.

Often, people with low back pain begin to lose the ability to flex or round through the low back. This is typically a protective mechanism at first, but over time will only work to create more pain and tightness in the low back. Strategically working in a movement like this will go a long way to improving on the lost range of motion of lumbar flexion.

Assessing for key weight bearing range of motion is critical for understanding if the foot and ankle is holding you back in the golf swing.

Past injuries, pain, and mobility limitations at the interface between the ground and the body will influence the swing sequence, power production, and consistency in the swing.

The Lat test is a critical test for golfers. Its best quality is the comprehensive nature of the test. To pass this test, we need access to shoulder capsule mobility, lat muscle extensibility, lumbar spine flexion and pelvis extension, and thoracic spine extension. If we are missing any of these components, we will struggle to pass this test. The same goes for the golf swing. It does not happen at one joint at a time. We need to be able to use multiple joints and positions in order to unlock the mechanics we need from the swing. Unfortunately, the best part of this test is also its limitations. It does not clarify where we need to focus to improve it. That’s why we always do a joint by joint analysis in our comprehensive evaluation at integrated rehab!

This is a great drill for loading the trail side hip and lower extremity for the coil in the golf swing. Learn to transfer weight from the trail side into the lead side explosively.

If you struggle with hanging back or a reverse pivot, addressing pain and mobility at key joints is the first step. After that, strength through range of motion is critical. Last, we can work through dynamic drills like this to start the process of translating these changes into your swing!

09/05/2025

This is a great drill to challenge mobility and strength in the backswing and downswing in the upper half.

We also get to incorporate the sequencing for the upper half of the body in the golf swing.

Address restrictions in the body BEFORE practicing the golf swing. Physical restrictions will keep you from achieving the positions you are aiming for and build poor habits.

Taking a good history is critical from both the medical and coaching perspective. If your rehab or teaching professional is not listening, consider looking for someone who will!
