It's ok if you are not happy all the time. Happiness is not a constant emotion. It's not a constant state of mind. Life happens and sometimes people experiences highs and lows in life. I want to normalize the flow of different emotions. Feeling a range of emotions, even sadness, stress, and frustration is an important part of life. Stress is apart of life. Everyone has stress. You can feel stress when you worry about things like family, friends, relationships, work, and money. You can feel stress in your body when you have a lot of things you need to take care of or when you aren't getting enough rest. Stress can help you meet deadlines or avoid danger. However, being in a constant state of stress can impact you mentally, emotionally, and physically. Being in a constant state of stress can increase vulnerability to depression and anxiety. Long term chronic stress can lead to feelings of worry and sadness. It can even lead you to dwell on negative thoughts. It's nothing wrong with taking time out for yourself to relax or engage in an activity that you enjoy. Incorporating self-care and more time for yourself when you are able to can help you cope with stress in healthy ways.

Alexandra Mayes believes in teaching individuals to improve their emotional and mental wellbeing. Alex knew at a young age that she wanted to help people. While attending Tennessee State University as an undergraduate, she took a course in psychology that changed her life forever. She learned from that course how mental health impacts every area of our lives; it influences human development, perceptions, emotions, motivation, and behaviors. Although she considers herself resilient in her own journal to improve her wellbeing; she developed an awareness that others will not have that privilege. She knew that she wanted to provide guidance, educate, and help others who needed support in their journey to improve their mental health. She has been in the mental health field for eight years now and has worked with children, teens, and adults. In 2021 she decided to open Mindful Steps PLLC. Mindful Steps is a group practice with the goal to expand access to mental health care, provide psychoeducation, and improve how people view mental health treatment. She is a licensed therapist, CEO, and Co-owner of Mindful Steps. She received her bachelor's degree in Psychology from Tennessee State University (TSU), and she also received her master’ s degree in Counseling Psychology from TSU as well. Alex approach to therapy is integrative and focuses on identifying the client’s strengths, identifying maladaptive behaviors, and teaching healthy coping strategies. These integrative approaches are rooted in Person – Centered Therapy, Cognitive Behavior Therapy, and Narrative Therapy.

I want you to take a moment and think about a memory of when you went through a significant life experience that transformed you for the better. Now I want you to think of a moment when you overcame a challenge. What kind of feelings do you notice when you think of both? Recalling positive memories can help boost your mood to happiness.

On average, we have at least 70,000 thoughts daily; sometimes, negative thoughts can stick out like a sore thumb. Negative thoughts can sometimes come randomly, and the next thing you know, you are in a loophole of negative thoughts. When you find yourself stuck in this draining loophole, look for ways to reframe these thoughts in a more positive light. Reframing negative perceptions isn’t dismissing the bad. It allows you to take a more even, balanced, and realistic look at experiences.
