Did you know not all ocular prosthetics are worn due to an eye being surgically removed? Sometimes a patient has what is called phthisis bulbi or a phthisical eye, underneath a prosthesis. This is a condition where the eye shrinks and loses function due to severe damage.

Pictured is the same phthisical eye captured in two ways. The shape on the right is the impression taken over the eye, while the left is the impression cast into a mold. You can see the damaged cornea centrally in both shapes if you look closely.

Are your artificial tears not enough with this winter weather? When the weather changes and we start using dry heat indoors, an ocular prosthesis can be affected and dryness symptoms can increase.

Our office carries two versions of an artificial tear lubricating oil to use when your socket needs a little more support. You can purchase each of these versions/sizes in our office or call and have them shipped to your home. If you have any questions, be sure to ask your Ocularist at your next visit or shoot us a message!
