Did you know not all ocular prosthetics are worn due to an eye being surgically removed? Sometimes a patient has what is called phthisis bulbi or a phthisical eye, underneath a prosthesis. This is a condition where the eye shrinks and loses function due to severe damage.

Pictured is the same phthisical eye captured in two ways. The shape on the right is the impression taken over the eye, while the left is the impression cast into a mold. You can see the damaged cornea centrally in both shapes if you look closely.
