Empower Tennessee was invited by the Tennessee Disability Coalition to speak at a press conference on Friday about the proposed State legislation (HB901/SB861) to eliminate the Tennessee Human Rights Commission.

The HRC is a nonpartisan organization employing more than 30 people to investigate accusations of discrimination in employment, housing, and other basic needs.

The proposed legislation would move these responsibilities to the politically-appointed Office of the Attorney General.

We've seen some of the questionable actions by this office that would negatively impact people with disabilities; notably the Lane case in which our AG argued in front of SCOTUS that the State of Tennessee shouldn't be required to comply with the ADA and make our public buildings -- including court houses -- accessible to its citizens.

We're so proud of our Director of Engagement, Kasondra Farmer, for speaking so eloquently on this subject and encourage you to educate your elected officials and friends about the potential impact of this legislation on the people in our state.

WATCH LIVE: Lawmakers and stakeholders hold a press conference on a bill they say would strip Tennessee citizens of legal protections.

We are the best.

Not in spite of disability, but often because it is a part of us.

-- The Tennessee Disability Coalition of which Empower Tennessee is a Member

Americans with disabilities have brilliance, have talent, have skills. We have value. Often our experiences adapting to a world not made for us and to attitudes that question our value has honed a creativity and a resilience and a work ethic that benefits our careers and our places of business and our communities exponentially.

In a press conference today on the tragic D.C. plane crash last evening, the President questioned whether disability should disqualify us from certain jobs, stating that his administration wants only the best.

Our answer: We are the best. Not in spite of disability, but often because it is a part of us. It is false that disability is disqualifying. It is discrimination to discount us because of such false beliefs.

Hate speech hurts. To everyone in our community hurt by our President's statements, please know your value. You are part of a beautiful, rich community with a history of overcoming hate and low expectations. This community is strong and will persevere.
