His playground was the eastern slopes of Lookout Mountain, Tennessee from Point Park to Rock City with time spent hiking the trails built by Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Brian graduated from the University of Chattanooga with a degree in philosophy, religion and sociology in 1959. He graduated from Vanderbilt Divinity School in 1961. His intention was to enter a student ministry, but he decided to enter the pastoral ministry of the United Methodist Church at Culleoka, Tennessee. Brian pursued 2 terms at the School of Social Work through the University of Tennessee. He worked a number of part time jobs to help support his family, including working at the Bethlehem Community Center and the Martha O’Brian Community Center.

Brian found his vocational home working with the Vocational Rehabilitation Services for the state of Tennessee for 41 years. He retired in 2008.

Brian married Annette "Nan" Elizabeth Crawford in 1997.

Brian said recently when reflecting on his life, “I have been most blessed by our Lord Jesus Christ.”

Judith McKenzie

Judith Kay Reaume was born on April 21, 1939, to Norman and Edith Reaume of Dearborn Michigan. She joined big sister Barbara, and they were joined a few minutes later by twin sister Janet. In 1945, Edith passed away leaving Norm and the 3 girls. Grandma Lulu Reaume moved in to take care of the girls while their dad worked. Lillian (Adams) Oz entered the picture by marrying Norman in 1947. The growing family continued to grow with the addition of Susan, Elaine and Larry. In 1958 Judy married the love of her life, Donald McKenzie. They settled in Dearborn until a teaching job for Don in Rochester, Michigan in 1960 brought the couple up to Rochester where Judy worked at Michigan Christian College. In the fall of 1963 Don got a job teaching for the Dearborn Public Schools at Henry Ford Elementary and daughter Karen joined the couple that October. Don and Judy bought their first house in Dearborn in 1964. Daughter Melinda joined the family in 1966. Don and Judy were always known for the hard work at the Dearborn Church of Christ. After several years she went to work as a clerk at the Dearborn Schools Credit Union where she worked for ten years. In 1998 following the closure of the Dearborn Church of Christ, Don and Judy began attending the Allen Park Church of Christ. Judy oversaw potlucks, funeral meals and ordering supplies for the Bible class program. Judy also helped with publishing the weekly bulletin. Oma, as she was known by all the grandchildren attended numerous school events, band concerts, sporting events and spent many hours “babysitting” whenever needed. She loved her grandchildren and they knew it! Even with her declining health and memory in the last few years, seeing her grandchildren and great grandchildren always brought a smile to her face. In 2021 with the decline of health, Don and Judy moved to Tennessee to be with daughter Karen.

Carolyn Sue McLaughlin

With heavy hearts, we celebrate the life of Carolyn McLaughlin, a deeply loved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend whose life was defined by faith, love, and quiet strength.

Born in Kentucky, she carried with her the warmth, hospitality, resilience and kindness that would become the hallmark of her life. In her later years, she moved to Franklin to be closer to the people who brought her the greatest joy—her family, especially her beloved grandchildren.

She was a devoted wife to her loving husband, Brian McLaughlin, and a proud and devoted mother to her children: Nerissa, Austin, and Paul. Her greatest delight was being “Yaya” to her eleven cherished grandchildren, each of whom she adored beyond measure.

Known for her gentle spirit and servant’s heart, she had a way of making everyone feel welcome and loved. Her home was a place of warmth—filled with open arms, home-cooked meals, laughter, and the comforting sense that you belonged. She was a wonderful cook, an avid reader, loved her flowers & garden and someone who found joy in caring for others.

Beautiful both inside and out, she lived her life as a reflection of her deep and unwavering faith. She embodied the qualities of the Proverbs 31 woman—grace, strength, humility, and devotion to her family.

She was surrounded by family and love in her final days, just as she had spent her life surrounding others with the same.

Her legacy lives on in the family she cherished, the faith she carried so diligently, and the countless lives she touched with her kindness. She will be remembered always for her gentle spirit, her steadfast love, and the beautiful example she set for all who knew her.

Proverbs 31:25-31 NIV "She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come. She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue. She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness. Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: “Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all.” Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised. Honor her for all that her hands have done, and let her works bring her praise at the city gate."

Thank you to all of our family and friends for joining us in celebrating Carolyn. Though our hearts grieve her absence, we rejoice in the promise of eternal life through Christ and the assurance that she is now at peace in the presence of the Lord. Carolyn’s love, faith, and gentle spirit will live on in the lives of her family and all who were blessed to know her. Until we meet again, she will remain forever in our hearts.

Donald James Thornton

With sadness, sorrow, and a little laughter that we announce the passing of Donald “Donny” Thornton, 72, of Ashland City.

Donny lived a simple life. He believed that of it had fur, scales, or feathers it was a friend. Humans on the other hand had to pass inspection.

He was known for his signature warning “Watch out! She bites”. Stepping into his home, you were always greeted with “Watch out for the alligator, it bites too”.

Donny leaves behind a legacy of silliness & kindness toward the creatures who can’t speak for themselves and a collection of family and friends who will forever be looking for alligators.
