I’ve had some interesting and thought provoking conversations with patients, friends, and people at the gym over the past couple of weeks. It’s funny how certain topics can seem to come out of nowhere. Something that hasn’t come up in forever suddenly starts showing up everywhere. Almost like it’s a sign. So, I’ll acknowledge it.
I’ll start with a quick rundown of a few recent conversations. About a week ago at the gym, a guy came up to me to talk about his lower back pain. He knew I was a Chiropractor and asked for advice. We had a good conversation, but when I suggested he stop by my office so I could take a closer look and help him, he said he didn’t think I could help and that Chiropractic might actually hurt him.
The next few conversations were similar. Patients would tell me about friends or family members dealing with pain, some dealing with new pain, some with pain they have had for as long as they can remember, but the common theme was the same. They refused to see a Chiropractor. Some out of fear, some out of ignorance, some because they’ve been told we’re “quacks,” and others because they believe Chiropractic will leave them worse off.
Unfortunately, this is very common. Sad, but common.
What I usually tell people is this: there are a lot of people who say they’ll “never let a Chiropractor touch them”… until the day they do. I meet those people all the time. They come in when things finally get bad enough. When I’m their last option before surgery. I’ve even had spouses of medical doctors and surgeons tell me, “My husband/wife doesn’t know I’m here.”
And this is where things get interesting.
When you change someone’s perspective, when you actually change their life. Then, they become your biggest advocates. They tell their friends, their family, anyone they know who’s struggling. They become walking billboards for what you do.
But on the other side, there will always be people who choose surgery instead. Sometimes it works out. Sometimes it doesn’t. I’m not here to bash the medical profession. What they do, especially in emergencies, is nothing short of miraculous. But in my opinion, surgery should be the last option… because you can’t undo it.
I guess what I’m trying to say is that I’m grateful for the people who trust me to help them. I’m grateful for those who give Chiropractic a chance before taking that final step. I just wish more people were open to trying it, before committing to something they can’t take back.
