Hand switching is very common in early childhood as motor skills are still developing.
By around ages 5–6, most children begin showing a more consistent hand preference during skilled tasks.
If switching is still frequent at that age, it may be helpful to look at underlying skills like coordination, motor planning, and midline integration. OT can help support that development.

I’ve seen this game posted by a few other therapist and was very quickly influenced to buy it. It’s such a fun and great tool for skills like:

🔵 visual tracking
🔴 motor planning
🔵 eye-hand coordination
🔴 bilateral coordination
🔵 reaction time
🔴 impulse control

And more!!

There are 4 different games to play with these dots PLUS endless ways to adapt for different kiddos and needs.

and yes.. I beat him

These are all more common than you think. OT supports people of all ages to participate in meaningful activities. Some of these activities can look different for children.
They are developing fine motor skills, bilateral coordination, sensory processing, emotional regulation, executive functioning and more to help them be able to zip their pants, complete a craft, enjoy family dinner, socialize with friends, and participate independently in daily routines.
If your child struggles with these things, OT can help! The first part is just understanding :)

You use fine motor skills ALL DAY EVERY DAY without even realizing it.

Brushing your teeth, opening any kind of package or container, putting your socks on, using tools or utensils, pushing buttons or spinning the dial to crank up the volume in your car. Fine motor skills - nonstop.

Fine motor skills are CRUCIAL for functional independence and so so so many kids struggle in this area.

So my advice? Pull out the playdoh and Legos, dig in the dirt, and hang from the monkey bars! Get them PLAYING!!

Signs your child may benefit from feeding therapy. If swiping through these slides reminds you of your child, it may be time to look into feeding therapy. I know it sounds intense but with the right therapist, feeding is so much fun!

are such a great open ended toy and perfect because you can keep adding and expanding your collection! Plus you can use them in the bathtub!

As a pediatric OT, I love the developmental benefits but also.. they are just SO FUN!!
