The 29th Annual Gallatin City Cemetery Candlelight Tour sponsored by the Sumner County Museum will be held Saturday, October 4th from 5 PM until 10 PM. If you have never attended this tour, each year different individuals buried at the cemetery are selected to be represented by local actors (sometimes actual descendants of the deceased) and are dressed in clothing for the period they lived and a brief history/background is told about them at their gravesite. They range from everyday folks to prominent buinesss and political leaders to a Pulitzer Prize winning author. Please be assured this tour is conducted in a respectful and dignified manner and the walking path follows the cemetery roads and unused pathways.

This community favorite event features stories from those characters who now reside at the Historic Gallatin City Cemetery.

On this Memorial Day, as we honor the ultimate sacrifice made by the courageous men and women of our military, we reflect on the tragic sinking of the USS Juneau on November 13, 1942, near Guadalcanal. This incident marks the most significant combat-related loss of life for a single family in U.S. military history. The five Sullivan brothers—George, Francis, Joseph, Madison, and Albert—were the sons of Thomas and Alleta Sullivan from Waterloo, Iowa. They all lost their lives while serving on the light cruiser USS Juneau during World War II. The brothers enlisted in the U.S. Navy together and insisted on serving as a unit, but tragically, all five perished when the USS Juneau was torpedoed and sank during the Battle of Guadalcanal. Their deaths, along with those of many other crew members, led to a change in Navy policy regarding the assignment of family members to the same ship. Although the remains of all five brothers were lost at sea, they are each commemorated with a cenotaph (marker) at Arlington National Cemetery.
