At Nurses Day on the Hill, these incredible professionals showed the power of advocacy, standing up for their patients, their communities, and the future of healthcare.

Nurses do far more than provide care; they help shape policies, improve access, and ensure our communities are heard.

Healthcare simply wouldn’t exist without them.

Thank you to the nurses who continue to lead, serve, and advocate every single day.

Black History Month is a time to recognize the leaders who strengthened nursing in Tennessee long before the doors of opportunity were fully open.

From the courage of Black nurses who served their communities during segregation, to those who stood alongside the Civil Rights Movement that reshaped our state, their commitment to care and justice helped move Tennessee forward. Health equity, access to care, and professional advancement did not just happen. It was built through perseverance, advocacy, and service.

In addition, Tennessee’s HBCUs continue that legacy today. Tennessee State University in Nashville and LeMoyne-Owen College in Memphis have long played important roles in educating and empowering future health professionals, expanding opportunity, and strengthening communities.

Black nurses in Tennessee have shaped patient care, education, policy, and leadership for generations. And their influence continues to guide the future of our profession.

This month, we honor their history, celebrate their leadership, and reaffirm our commitment to a nursing profession that reflects and serves every community in Tennessee.

Nurses standing together.

Engaged. Informed. Present.

At TNA Nurses Day on the Hill, nurses from across Tennessee gathered not just to attend an event, but to participate in shaping the future of health care. Students. Direct care nurses. Leaders. Advocates. All bringing their experience and perspective to the table.

When nurses show up, policy changes.
When nurses participate, patients benefit.
When nurses lead, communities are stronger.

This is nursing in action.

Brett Young, Director of Government Affairs for the Tennessee Nurses Association, works year round to ensure the voice of nursing is heard at the Capitol.

As chair of TNA’s Government Affairs Committee, he helps lead the review of legislation, develop talking points, defend key bills, and build coalitions that strengthen our profession.

TNA Nurses Day on the Hill is our largest legislative event of the year. And it brings together students, administrators, nurse leaders, direct care nurses, and nurse practitioners from across Tennessee.

In the corridors of the Cordell Hull Office Building, these nursing students were not just walking to their next appointment. They were walking into their future as advocates.

Smiles. Confidence. Notes in hand. Talking points ready.

They came prepared to speak not only for themselves, but for their patients, their schools, and their profession.

This is what the future of nursing looks like in Tennessee: informed, engaged, and unafraid to step into the legislative process.

And this is how change begins. One conversation at a time.

With 145,000 actively licensed nurses in Tennessee and 6.9 million nurses across the United States, the voice of nursing is not small. It is powerful.

Nancy Anness, board-certified family nurse practitioner and former Chief Advocacy Officer for Ascension Saint Thomas, brought that message to TNA Nurses Day on the Hill with focus and leadership.

With more than 40 years of experience leading health policy initiatives, clinical care, and community outreach efforts across Tennessee, she reminded attendees that this is the year of the power of the nurse.

When nurses come together, we are not just caregivers. We are a force capable of shaping health policy for our state and our nation.

The power is already in this profession. The next step is using it.

At 95 years young, Dr. Barbara Reynolds stood before the 200 plus nurses and nursing students at TNA Nurses Day on the Hill and reminded us of what a life of service truly looks like.

A nurse since the 1950s, educator, former dean, policy advocate, and founder of the Reynolds Fund for Health Care Policy, Dr. Reynolds has spent decades shaping the profession and strengthening health policy in Tennessee. And she is still encouraging the next generation to lead with courage and conviction.

Her message was clear. Advocate for your patients. Advocate for your profession. And never underestimate the impact one nurse can make.

She received a well-deserved standing ovation at the end of her remarks.

Dr. Reynolds is a testament to a life well lived in service to others and a powerful reminder that nursing leadership does not retire.

At TNA Nurses Day on the Hill, Dr. April Kapu, Senior Associate Dean for Strategic Partnerships and Global Affairs at Vanderbilt University School of Nursing, reminded us of something powerful.

Advocacy is not optional. It is part of our responsibility to our patients and to our profession.

When nurses, nurse practitioners, and midwives come together with one voice, we strengthen our ability to shape legislation that directly impacts patient care across Tennessee. And we elevate the profession at the same time.

The Tennessee Nurses Association exists to unify that voice. To bring nurses together. To ensure we are not only at the bedside, but also at the table where decisions are made.

Progress in health care depends on nursing leadership.
And that leadership starts with showing up.

This photo captures just a portion of the nursing students as they made their way from the program and lunch at TSU’s Downtown Campus to the Cordell Hull Building to meet with their Tennessee State House and Senate members.

Walking with purpose. Speaking with confidence. Advocating for their patients and their profession.

The future of nursing is not on the sideline. It is informed. It is engaged. And it is already at the Capitol.

Stay tuned for more from this great day of Advocacy.
