I’ve worked in mental health for over 40 years—and if there’s one thing I know for sure, it’s this:

Ever wondered what makes a person tick? What makes them choose what they do and how they do it?

I had never thought about this much before.

Then a few years back I realized that I was just reacting to the things that needed to get done each day and not seriously considering my true priorities, my highest values, nor owning my decisions.

This kicked me in the butt a few times, like when I purchased tickets to go someplace fun then realized later I didn’t have the money to pay all the bills that month. YIKES!

Ever have something like this happen to you?

I had to do some serious soul-searching and get my priorities in line.

So here is what I did that worked for me:

💚Explored the things that are important to me, (activities, purchases, electricity 🙂)
💚Aligned those with my values
💚Set up a system for taking care of the most important and necessary things -first things first
💚Practice WIN= What’s. Important. Now.
💚Review every day to make sure I am on target with my dreams and desires.

Using this criteria as a guide has really helped me stay focused and in alignment with all that I want to do and experience. I am a firm believer that when we have a ruler to measure our patterns and behaviors, we can make much better decisions and stay on track.

Ever wonder how a therapist starts her day?

I used to get up at 5:00 am and run 3 miles every day, even on holidays. But after many years of doing this, I was not getting enough rest and realized I was wearing out my body!

Now I have a more gentle approach to starting my day.

It starts with prayer, meditation, reading and journaling. I keep all of this on my nightstand, so then when I wake up first thing in the morning, I see it and get right to it. I still get my exercise in after that, followed by my daily dose of sipping chocolate! :)

Starting my day with a more intentional, purposeful mindset, rather than pushing and over-achieving, has led to me feeling more grounded, relaxed, and happier.

And surprise- I am also more focused and productive!
