Nursing Family, Don’t Panic — and Don’t Stop Elevating
There’s been a lot of talk about the Department of Education redefining which programs count as “professional degrees.” Yes, nursing master’s and doctoral programs were included in the list of degrees that may be reclassified.
But hear me clearly: this does NOT change who we are, what we do, or the power of our profession.
Keep going after your BSN, MSN, DNP, APRN pathway, education or administration track, whatever lane you’re running in. Don’t let a federal definition knock you off your purpose.
Here’s a simple breakdown of what this change does and does NOT affect:
⸻
What This Change Affects
•Federal student loan classifications for certain graduate programs
•Borrowing limits or financial-aid categories for some advanced degrees
•How colleges can label or market specific graduate programs
•Possible future funding structures tied to “professional degree” status
⸻
What This Change Does NOT Affect
•RN licensure
•APRN licensure
•Scope of practice
•State Board of Nursing regulations
•Hiring requirements for RN, MSN, DNP, or APRN
•Professional respect, responsibility, or career pathways in nursing
•Your ability to become a nurse leader, educator, executive, or clinician
⸻
Bottom Line
Nursing remains a profession built on skill, science, compassion, and leadership.
This classification shift might change paperwork, but it does not change your future.
Keep investing in yourself. Keep elevating. Keep advancing.
Healthcare still needs strong, educated nurses now more than ever.
And just to be clear—this is my personal opinion. I’m not a politician and I’m not well versed in political processes, bills, or laws. I’m simply speaking from a place of passion for my profession.
